Can you Have Multiple eBay & PayPal Accounts?

Hi Andrew,

I have a dilemma about multiple eBay and PayPal accounts. Wherever I go (forums/blogs) I get mixed responses and it’s still not clear to me what I can or can’t do.

Ideally I would love to work in 3 separate niches on eBay and use separate accounts for each – so that I can have a dedicated shop and template for each niche. Can this be done? Or do I risk losing my accounts if eBay finds out?

Your advice would be highly appreciated.

Thanks,
Nicola

Hi Nicola,

This question frequently comes up and for some reason, people are still confused. It’s probably because for years eBay and PayPal were very unclear about the exact rules governing multiple accounts. But nowadays, in 2013, it’s actually all very simple and straightforward.

Multiple eBay Accounts

On eBay you can have as many accounts as you want. eBay itself confirms this on the Help Page here. All you need to open a new eBay account is a separate email address. You can safely use the same name, address and contact information. All you need is a separate e-mail account.

Why would you need 2 or more eBay accounts? There are several possible reasons:

1) To sell in multiple niches.

2) To keep private sales and purchases separate from business transactions.

3) To use one account for buying and another one for selling when working with a used goods concept.

These are the most typical situations where you would need to have multiple eBay accounts and eBay is totally cool with that.

What you should be aware of though, is that all these accounts will be interlinked by eBay and that’s bad news. In practice this means that if one of your accounts get suspended/banned, the others will be closed shortly afterwards because from eBay’s point of view you will have become too much of a risk as a seller.

But these “hard bans” usually only happen when you breach eBay’s selling policies – like selling counterfeit or prohibited items. Another highly risky situation is if you use a dropshipper who lets you down, forcing you to refund dozens of sales which leads to loads of negative feedback (just another reason why I’m not a huge fan of dropshipping).

Can you use the same PayPal account for all these multiple eBay accounts? Yes, you can! You don’t have to even create new emails for each; you can use the same PayPal payment email for all your eBay accounts.

Multiple PayPal Accounts

What if you need multiple PayPal accounts too? Is it allowed? Yes, it is!

Under PayPal’s general Terms & Conditions you can have 2 accounts:

1 personal account
1 business account

But this comes with a note that you can have multiple business accounts upon approval/manual request. Now, don’t waste your time trying to find a special form or button on the PayPal website to request permission to open multiple PayPal accounts. There’s no such thing.

What you do is simply contact PayPal (from your existing account) when you plan to open a new PayPal business account and ask them if it’s ok to do so. I have done this many times and the answer always comes back POSITIVE in less than 24 hours.

You can of course open a new account without asking PayPal but that would be a breach of their T&Cs. It’s better just to contact them and get their approval to open another business account to avoid any nasty surprises later on (this hasn’t happened to me, but they may not let you open another account if your current account is in bad standing).

But remember, opening a new business account means that you’re opening it for a completely new business, not just an eBay account. For this, you’ll need company registration documents, a company bank account and ideally a credit card, too. You won’t be able to have your PayPal account verified and the account limits lifted without these documents.

Lastly, with multiple PayPal accounts the situation is exactly same as with multiple eBay accounts – if you mess up one account, chances are that you’ll lose all the other accounts, too.

And it can go even further: as you know, PayPal is owned by eBay. What usually happens is that all your eBay and PayPal accounts are interlinked. eBay knows exactly which accounts you own by tracking your IP address, name, address and financial information. If one of your eBay accounts gets suspended, chances are that all the other eBay AND PayPal accounts will be suspended too.

Sounds scary? It is very scary indeed! That’s why you want to do everything in your power to not let this situation happen. Do not sell dodgy items or work with risky suppliers. In most cases, people who lose all their accounts make stupid, costly mistakes. There are rare occasions when totally innocent accounts get banned but they’re very few and far between.

Conclusion

To sum it up:

1) You can have multiple eBay accounts – as many as you want in fact, as long as you use a new email address for each account.

2) You can have ONE personal account with PayPal and multiple business accounts as long as you own multiple businesses. To stay safe and in line with PayPal’s T&Cs, contact PayPal before opening a new/additional business account.

3) Follow the rules – both eBay’s and PayPal’s – to avoid your accounts becoming suspended. If one of your accounts is banned, chances are that you’ll lose them all.

Thanks,
Andrew

I opened a SECOND Ebay business account, that part was straight forward, but it is connected to my own personal / PRIVATE to me Ebay account, and I cannot separate the two, I have TWO email addresses, but address 2 business is inseparable from address 1 private, I was thinking off deleting account 2 and starting again, but guess that will delete private account 1 which is over 10 years old with 380 positive feedback. Does anyone know how do I get account 2 business to be used as Account 2 only, and totally independent of account 1.

6-weeks have gone by and nowhere on the www have I found this problem listed. Is it a Google email syncing problem, or an Ebay problem?

    1. Andrew Minalto

I’m sorry, but I won’t be able to help with this either…. I don’t sell on eBay anymore, don’t even know how accounts work there nowadays.

Have you tried contacting eBay and asking them for advice on how to best deal with this situation?

      Andrew

I closed my Ebay store not long ago for several reasons(the main one is that I am retired now and trying to enjoy life a bit more). My question about second, third, etc. accounts for selling..I was always under the impression that if a seller owned a store, multiple accounts were acceptable, but not if one did not own a store and only uses the 50 free listings a month and any other promotions that Ebay occasionally gives out. Just need clarification. Thanks in advance, Chris

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Chris,

No, that is not true – anyone can have multiple eBay accounts, you don’t have to have an eBay store for that.

This is at least how it was when I was selling on eBay, a few years ago. I did quit it so don’t know what the latest rules are.

      Thanks,
      Andrew

Trying to work out why PayPal are taking funds from my bank account every time my son makes an eBay purchase from his eBay account.
I’m really confused, different email addresses on each account, different card and bank details, why would this be happening?

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Sandra,

It could be that your PayPal account is linked to his eBay account?

You need to check this in eBay settings.

      Andrew

  4. Hi Andrew,

I have learned a lot from your articles and they have helped me to establish an Ebay business.

I have now setup an website which is due to go live soon and it will use Paypal to process payments. Would it be better to use the same Paypal account that is integrated with Ebay or open a new separate one for the website.

I am more inclined to open a new one as I will be able to tell whether orders came from Ebay or my website. The only downside to this is that I have to go through the whole vetting process again.

    Thankyou.

    Salman

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Salman,

      Thanks for your comment.

You can only have ONE PayPal account for each business you have so you can’t open 2nd one just because you want to use it for the website…

So use the same account for your website.

      Thanks,
      Andrew

  5. Hi Andrew
I sell on Ebay and other platforms. When listing items on EBay is there anyway to find out what items are not allowed. I been lucky so far, but I’m afraid that I may end up listing something because I don’t know and my count will get suspended. Also is there a list with brands that I can’t sell or words that I can’t use? I am being told that all of this can get you in trouble with EBay. Thank you.

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Terrel,

There’s an official list of prohibited goods:

      https://www.ebay.co.uk/pages/help/policies/items-ov.html

And you can read about VERO (protected brands) program here:

      https://pages.ebay.com/seller-center/listing-and-marketing/verified-rights-owner-program.html

lastly, if in doubt, you can always contact support and ask their advice on any product you plan on selling.

      Thanks,
      Andrew

  6. Do eBay banned and suspend you from buying because of unpaid items ?

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Debbie,

Yes, I think they do this BUT only if you do it on a serious level. They won’t ban you from doing this once or twice.

      Andrew

      1. Hello,
        Andrew,
I Just joined Ebay a few days ago, made a purchase (paid, the item was shipped) and listed three of my genuine brand purses. Got suspended without any explanation. Called trying to understand what happened and they said the team has decided there was a concern with my listed items (!). I cannot believe it. They make people feel like criminals (lol). I really could not believe all this happened but I know my purses were purchased by me from retails like Bloomingdales and Nordstrom so I have no doubt they are authentic.
Very sad but ..probably for the better! As now I am reading many horror stories with eBay.

      2. Andrew Minalto

Sorry to hear that Anna, but I don’t sell on eBay anymore so don’t even know what to suggest to you.

  7. Hello Andrew
I have a problem with regard to Paypay and Ebay. About 12 years ago I opened an Ebay account in the UK connected to a UK bank. I now live in France, so I opened up a French Ebay account using the same user name, because I have 100% feedback and 700 sales/buys. I very rarely sell things, but recently I put some things for sale on my French Ebay site. Unbenown to me my Ebay site is still connected to my UK Paypal bank account. I am confused, because when I buy anything from Ebay I am given the option of which Paypal account to use.
When it came to paying the fees, I cannot seem to link a French Paypal account to Ebay? When I phoned Ebay they said, because I initially set up my account in the UK I have to pay all fees in GBP from my UK bank!! I am wondering if I should just start again and have a new French user name with Ebay, because I can’t find a way of keeping the two separate. Thanks for any advice!

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Deborah,

Unfortunately, there’s not much I can help you with… if eBay told you that you can’t use your French PayPal account, you can’t.

You will have no option but to create a new eBay account for selling.

      Thanks,
      Andrew

  8. Judith Siebers

I have been both buying and selling on ebay for years.
Recently my email accounts were hijacked or something, and my old email address is nowhere to be found-EXCEPT on several places such as ebay, where I was told I must start a new account!! This is very upsetting, as my username is connected to the old email address. I have 100% good reviews and over 1400 sales\buys. Is there no way around this?

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Judith,

As far as I know, you can easily change your email account from your account page. That is if you can login into your account and do that.

If not, I’m afraid you will have to open a new account.

      Andrew

  9. Hi Andrew

I bought from ebay to dropship. i purchased from a few different sellers. i checked rating. But later found out i was scammed like 50+ transactions+some big orders never delivered. The item is like $50+ to 70+/item. Sellers sold the stolen items. I returned in ebay or disputed in pp for transactions after return period. Naturally, I fight back to get my money back. I won all pp claims. but later pp just limited my account out of blue saying i have higher than normal return. I explained to pp I had business pp account and i purchased a lot of items and got scammed but they said i m risk to them. I also sell in ebay n my ebay seller accts r good standing. so my ebay stores are limbo as no pp.

I want to know if i can create a new pp acct in a new country as I recently moved. PP knows that I am in new country as I contacted them with overseas number. pp staff asked if I have pp acct in new country. I said no as I haven’t.

    1. Can I create new pp account in new country using my passport?
    2. Will pp link my new account in 1 with limited acct in old country?
    3. I have a friend who can let me use her pp account for my ebay stores, should i link to my ebay stores?
    4. Will pp detect based on my ebay stores and block my friend acct?
    5. Should i create new ebay stores and link to new pp account and rebuild the selling limit?

Your advice is highly appreciated. I am just a stay at home mum trying to make a small income while taking care of my baby. I do honest buying and selling. But I wasn’t protected by either ebay or pp when this happened. Thanks for your time. Sorry for long post!

      Hi Cassy,

      Thanks for your comment.

Unfortunately I won’t be able to give you advice on this as I’m not an expert really in banned/suspended payPal accounts.

You should seek for help on dedicated forums covering this issue, like:

  10. Hello I have a question that hopefully you’ll be able to answer. It’s kind of a long story but I worked for a man for 6 years which I no longer work for and he and a couple of his friends including his wife all opened eBay accounts. each one of the eBay accounts had separate PayPal accounts. So when I started working for him I also opened my own Ebay account and my own PayPal account. shortly thereafter he decided that he wanted to use my account for his own use. So I had to make another eBay account for myself and I opened a new PayPal account. During this time I would have hoped that he changed the name from my name to his name on both the eBay and PayPal account that he took from me. But he did not. He left it under my name and since Massachusetts changed their law now if you get $600 or more they will send you a 1099 form I do not live in Massachusetts anymore havent for years and I do not work for him anymore and yet I got sent the 1099 form at my old address where my family lives. Anyways we are trying to figure out how to completely give that eBay and PayPal account over to him so I do not get hit with the 1099 form ever again since I have no business with that account. is there a way he can just put his Paypal account under that eBay account and erase the other PayPal account that’s currently under it? Thank you so much for your time.

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Sarah,

      Thanks for your comment.

Unfortunately I’m not familiar with how this works in the US etc. but you can’t change a name on PayPal’s account – the only way to deal with this would be to close the account for good. And this is what you should probably do to avoid any future tax implications.

      Thanks,
      Andrew

      1. If I close my paypal account with my name on it do you think he could just use his paypal account and connect it to the old ebay account that used to be mine?

      2. Andrew Minalto

Yes, it is very easy to change PayPal account for eBay – just need to change email address in eBay settings.

      3. Thats great to hear. Thank you so much for your help. It is much appreciated. 🙂

      4. Andrew Minalto

        You’re welcome Sarah! 🙂

  11. Hi Andrew, my business pp is closed 6 months ago.. i am ebay seller and my business is stopped. I need to know that can i open with same company name new paypal account? i will change email address and i will add different bank account.

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Jack,

You should ask PayPal and ask them directly about this.

I have never closed an account like this and tried to re-open again with same company, so don’t know how they look at this.

      Thanks,
      Andrew

  12. Hello Andrew, I am going self employed, selling on Ebay and Etsy, but different things, would I need to keep separate accounts for both, the monies will be going into the same bank account and paypal, thank you. Jason

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Jason,

You can use one account for this, no need for 2 accounts.

      Andrew

  13. Hello Andrew,

The case is as follows: I have a friend that wanted to circumvent the ebay daily deals item limit, so after he purchased the limit( lets say 5) on his account, he gave me his credit card and had me purchase another 5 on my account and had it shipped to him( obv the billing was his billing as well). So obv ebay caught on and restricted my account specifically from buying only. My mom also has an ebay account (i still live at home) and her account has no restriction( i figured that maybe since its the same household they may link the accounts and restrict hers as well). Im starting to think that the restriction was specifically regarding my friends billing and shipping address since the reason that my account was restricted was because of the purchases made through his credit card. So my question is: maybe my billing address wasn’t restricted and they locked my account only specifically bc of the activity of my friends credit card that took place on my account, which would mean that if i open a new ebay account then maybe im in the clear bc my billing address itself may not have actually been flagged, do you think that all of this is possibly true and maybe im in the clear if i make a new account and purchase items with my own credit card?

    Thanks,

    John

    1. Andrew Minalto

I’m sorry John but I really don’t have an answer for that question….

No one knows exactly how these security/account restrictions work with eBay – we can only take wild guesses.

If your moms account hasn’t been suspended yet, chances are that suspension is related to your friends card or postcode used. But I don’t know really, sorry.

      Andrew

  14. Hello Andrew! After reading this post I just got a couple questions to double check with you and see if I understood correctly. 1. You are able to create 2 seller account or more and sell on both account. 2. You are able to link for eg your personal PayPal account to both of your eBay seller account.

    3. New eBay accounts consist of limited listings n more. If I don’t contact eBay to request for upgrade of my listing capacity, would eBay eventually upgrade my listing capacity ?? If yes what would the decision be based upon ? The duration of it till it happens and lastly the increase of listing limit value. Thank you Andrew!!

    1. Andrew Minalto

      1) Yes, you can.

      2) Yes, you can.

      3) Yes, they will eventually. Don’t know exactly how long it takes now but it was 90 days +. Sorry, don’t know specific there.

  15. I was selling on Ebay since 1999, using it in the days of receiving a check/money order to avoid Paypal fees. In 2005, I finally opened a Paypal account and used it happily ever since. Recently my account was compromised and someone tried to use a credit card I am unfamiliar with through my account to purchase something in Canada. Paypal noticed the transaction and limited my account while they investigated the matter. Paypal ultimately resolved the issue and refunded my account. I mistakenly thought I was at risk of having this money taken from my bank account, but in actuality it was refunded to this credit card that I have no link to at all.

After the issue was resolved, I was relieved, but then my Paypal account was banned and a popup message stating I can’t use Paypal anymore! I disputed this but a rep from Paypal essentially accused ME of trying to use this credit card and make this purchase. I tried to tell them this was not me, it wasn’t my card, I have no idea what was trying to be purchased but to no avail. I disputed this transaction but Paypal determined it was an “authorized” transaction. It appears I am stuck, I can’t seem to get anyone from Paypal to really look at my 12 year Paypal history which never had an international purchase and never had a transaction amount as high as this one. I have no way to prove that my account was compromised. I have sent a hand written letter request to explain their denial of my dispute with no response. I’ve gotten no e-mail explanation either. It has been over a month now. Is there any way to speak with someone within Paypal (a supervisor perhaps) that could actually listen to me and actually look into the matter? Would it be beneficial to speak with someone at Ebay or are these entities completely separate now? Any advice would be appreciated.

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Aaron,

      Thanks for your comment.

PayPal and eBay are separate companies now…

I would recommend you keep calling PayPal once a day, maybe you get lucky and get a person who gets the situation.

You should also check out this forum for more information, tips & advice on banned PayPal accounts:

  16. newbanditos

hi, I have been selling on ebay for a while now with 100% feedback and top rated seller, but my ebay account has been suspended indefinitely due multiple selling violations but I do have another account selling under my wife with different ebay account and different PayPal account is still active/ok for now,
I think I have reset my ip address ( bought new router and hard reset my router ) but my mailing address is still the same and we are still using the same computer,
question is : will these 2 account will be linked by ebay?
    thank you

    1. Any updates on your wife’s account?

    2. Andrew Minalto

      Usually they’re linked, yes.

Sometimes it happens within days, sometimes it takes few weeks.

Or you could get lucky if course and escape the ban 🙂

  17. Hi, Andrew,

Is there a link somewhere to eBay’s FULL set of rules concerning multiple personal eBay accounts? All I can find is a short page with general information.

What I’d like to do is set up a second account, possibly under my wife’s name, so she can use eBay to assist my very elderly parents in downsizing / disposing of various items. (Mom & Dad both have quite a few items that would get pennies, if anything, at a yard sale – it is a rural area with not that much traffic – yet looking at completed listings tells us that given eBay type exposure, those items could sell nicely.)

While it would be nice to “gain” my 100% feedback to assist with selling, our situation is such* that I also have to consider that selling incurs much higher risk of negative feedback, than does my buying… and no way do I want to “damage” my existing account, as I might want to upgrade it to a business account in the future.

*We have kids, we both work, and we are also “tasked” with many care issues for my P’s, so I am quite worried about buyers’ feedback about shipping times, even if we clearly state that shipments may take up to 7 business days to get into the carriers’ hands.

We “could” start off the new account with perhaps a few small purchases and several sales of inexpensive items we or my P’s don’t really need to make much money on, so buyers would have at least a little confidence in us. But the question is, if we use the same PayPal account and / or the same street address for both accounts, is eBay going to link them anyway? Or if we set up a new PayPal account for my wife, but it ties into the same credit card account currently attached to my PayPal account, and we are, again, both at the same street address (I would hope!), then, again, are we “linked” by eBay?

Could something I’ve not thought of come into play?

Are these questions clear as mud? 🙂

    Thanks!

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Paul,

      Thanks for your comment.

They will link you anyway, yes.

But I still think it’s a good idea to create a separate eBay account for this venture, yes, as I understand your worry about higher risk of getting bad feedback etc.

I don’t think you can use same credit card for two PayPal accounts though.

      Andrew

  18. I recently opened a PayPal Business account to use with a Shopify store. However I would like to use this new PayPal account in place of my older PayPal personal account that has been attached to my Ebay account since 2005. The new PayPal account has its own separate bank account from my other PayPal account, so at the moment everything is completely separate.

The reason I wish to do this is so I can accept credit card payments, as I understand customers do not require a PayPal account if I am using a PayPal Business account with my listings. If yes, can I simply input the email address for the Business account into my Ebay listings, or is that risky? So far I have only handled one Shopify transaction with my new PayPal Business account, and that went fine.

    Thanks Andrew,

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Ian,

Yes, you can simply switch the PayPal email you have in eBay listings.

      Thanks,
      Andrew

  19. Hi Andrew,
I have an eBay store that my son and I do together. Both the eBay acct. and PayPal acct. are in my name. I am wanting to retire in the next year or two and my son (who is in his 40’s) wants to continue on with the store. My question is, would it be possible for him to link his personal PayPal acct. (or open a new PayPal acct.) to the store?

At that time, I want all income to go to him, and also I don’t want to be paying tax on income I would not be getting. This is primarily a tax concern, as PayPal sends the 1099 to me. I don’t want to get hit with the tax once I’m no longer involved with the store.

    Thank you!

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Kris,

      Thanks for your comment.

Yes, you can easily change the PayPal account/email in your eBay account BUT you can’t change the name on the account at your end.

As far as I know, transferring an eBay account to another person is only possible when it’s part of a business sale – so you could technically sell the business to your son and get name changed this way. You’ll have to contact eBay to approve this before you do it.

      Thanks,
      Andrew

  20. Hi Andrew,

I have read the questions, I don’t think this one has been asked: To your knowledge, can you change the email address that you command your paypal payments to be SENT TO, even if the paypal email registered owner is different than the ebay email registered owner? The reason I am asking it I am wondering if it is possible to circumvent the 20k/200 item tax rule?

Specifically, lets say I have my ebay account, I am selling items on, and I am using my paypal account. On the ebay selling form page, there is an area for “Payments accepted”, and a radio button for paypal, and there is a black space to type your paypal email address. So, can I come close to the maximum payments allowed to be accepted, and then change the paypal email address to a friends or relatives, assuming they are okay with it? Hopefully that makes sense? Is there any ruling that would disallow this? So Ebay user A has their Ebay user A account and Paypal user A account, after some time they want to continue to use their Ebay user A account, but then attach their friends/relatives Paypal user B account to their Ebay user A account.

Dodgy? Maybe, but allowed or any reason it wouldn’t go through? That is my question.

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Dodgy, yes.

It could work, at least for some time, but I wouldn’t do it.

It is very risky to connect any two or more PayPal/eBay accounts in such way as you can get suspended in no time, for no reason.

      I wouldn’t do it.

      Andrew

  21. Hi,

Really need your help as have few questions and would appreciate your feedback.

Is it possible to open a PayPal business account while your personal account has been limited?

Can you use the same details e.g. billing address etc for the business account?

Is there a timeframe to appeal the account limitation and how long can you leave an account in the limited state?

How does the Paypal account limit/appeal outcome affect your credit rating ?

Can one account limitation effect another person Paypal account or credit scoring etc who is living at the same address e.g . your partner?

    Thanks

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi There,

You should ask these questions on PayPal suspension forums, like this one:

      http://www.aspkin.com/forums/

      Thanks,
      Andrew

  22. Hi Andrew,

    Really hope you can help.

I have a business eBay account which I haven’t used for business sales for about 5 years. I’ve sold the odd personal item through it because the feedback is good.

My personal address and phone number are displayed to the public for this account.

I’ve tried asking eBay if I can move it back to a personal account but they won’t let me.

    Questions:

1 – Are your personal details displayed publicly with a personal account?
2 – Should I open a separate personal eBay account or add an account? I can use different email addresses for registration and PayPal if necessary.

    Many thanks for your help.

    Rodney

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Rodney,

      Thanks for your comment.

      1) No, with personal account your details are not published in listings.

      2) Yes, you can simply open a new, personal eBay account using a different email and use that for selling, if you don’t want to disclose your contact details in listings.

      Thanks,
      Andrew

      1. Rodney

        Thanks very much.

Great blog, keep up the good work.

        You’re welcome Rodney! 😉

  23. Hi Andrew,
I buy most of my stock from charity shops and car boot sales.
I do what I can to check authenticity.
    I sell used clothing.
However, in over 2000 listings 4 have been VERO flagged.
You cannot reason with eBay. They do not care for context or background. All they are interested in is “Strikes”.
So far I have had a one week ban (for the first two) and now a one month ban (for the second two).
I believe a lifetime ban would be next.
Should I open another account after my suspension and would this have a clean history or am I one or two items from a life ban and screwed no matter what I do?
    Thanks
    Mark

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Mark,

      Thanks for your comment.

It’s very hard to say but basically eBay LINKS all accounts a person owns (not only person but even whole household) so chances are that they would still link your new account to the old one.

But as I said, no one knows 100% how these automated bots/algorithms operate (apart from eBay).

      Andrew

  24. *change his name to my name.

  25. Thanks for the information 🙂

Is it safe to change my brother name and details on his eBay account then use my PayPal business account on it?

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Yes, you can do that.

  26. Hi Andrew,

I have a eBay business account with to my business PayPal account.

Can I use my PayPal business account to sell on my brother eBay account?

My brother gave me his eBay account. Should I change his name to mine before linking my PayPal business account to his eBay?

*he has high listing limit and doesn’t use it, that’s why he gave it me to use.
    Many thanks

    1. Andrew Minalto

If you use a BUSINESS PayPal account, it means it’s linked to an actual business and should use ONLY eBay accounts that are in your name or company’s name.

      Andrew

  27. Hi everyone,

I am having 1 eBay seller account and it is running over a year. It has been going well at the moment.

One month before, I liked to sell on different niches on eBay. So I created many eBay accounts on same day under the 1 ip address using different email addresses (but all are belonging to my name), User name also belonging to my name, Same address, Same phone number. At the time I did not know anything of eBay’s rules and regulations (using multiple accounts on eBay).

After some days, suddenly eBay suspended all of my new accounts except my old and first (one) account.

    And sent an email

    Hello ,

Your eBay account was suspended because recent account activity has raised serious security concerns. We’ve taken this precaution to protect our members while we make sure that the activity doesn’t cause harm — however unintentionally — to the eBay Community.

You won’t be able to use eBay in any way. This includes using another existing account or registering a new account.

Any outstanding selling fees are due immediately, and any amounts that you haven’t previously disputed will be charged to the billing method currently on file

    Thanks,
    eBay

    My questions are:
    1. Can I use many seller accounts under 1 ip address?
    2. Will this suspension affect for my old and first account?
    3. May I use the images which was used to listing products on suspended accounts, for my old account? (I am using one device for taking images for list a products on eBay)

    Thank you for your answer!

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Niftheen,

      Thanks for your comment.

You can use multiple eBay accounts under same IP address. The problem was – you created too many accounts at same time and this triggered red flag in eBay’s system.

I would recommend calling eBay first and trying to resolve this on the phone – explain them that you created those accounts for yourself to sell in different niches. There’s a small chance that they remove your restrictions but it’s worth giving a try.

Yes, this ban should have banned all your accounts, including the first/old one – but I don’t know why that one is still available for you. Could be that they haven’t linked it yet.

      Thanks,
      Andrew

  28. Hi Andrew.

Myself and my wife both have our own separate Ebay & Paypal accounts. So would these still both be linked as we live at the same address ?

    Cheers, Andy.

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Andy,

Yes, they will both be linked.

      Thanks,
      Andrew

  29. Hello, I have so many eBay accounts and PayPal accounts and one of my PayPal accounts are suspended and it’s under my legal name, the reason it was suspended was because I was 17 and it was considered as minor and the account is limited. Does that mean I can never open a account with PayPal in the future? Can this affect my future credit for career? Waiting for a reply! Thanks

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Nick,

If all other accounts are ok, I guess you’re fine (if you’re over 18 now).

Usually though PayPal blocks/suspends all accounts at the same time but if they haven’t done it, maybe it will be ok.

Hi i made a stupid mistake when i lent my paypal account to a friend with his own ebay account, only to find he was selling illegal copied dvds on his ebay account (he used my paypal and got reported). my ebay personal account is fine but now my paypal account is limited permently because i lent my paypal details to them thinking i was helping them doing them a favour (only to find he was selling dvd copied dvds) yet they know it was his ebay account and not mine. now i dont have a valid paypal account. says its permantly limited how can i get my paypal to work with my own ebay account again please?

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Sean,

Sorry to hear that but it was a stupid mistake indeed…

I do not offer advice on banned accounts. You could check out this forum to see if there’s anything you can do:

      Thanks,
      Andrew

  31. Hello Andrew,

I have an account that has powerseller status and still active; however, I know eBay does allow you to open a second account based on their policies. I want to have one to sell and another one to buy items on to. My only concern is, will they shut down both accounts if the IP addresses are the same?

I read the eBay incognito guide by Auction Essistance and it states in there that eBay can link two accounts based on IP and have them both suspended.

I am so confused since eBay says one thing and the guide says another. I don’t want to lose my Powerseller account because a mistake I made. Any help would be appreciated.

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Maggie,

      Thanks for your comment.

You have nothing to worry about. As per eBay rules, you CAN have multiple accounts, that’s perfectly fine.

The guide you’re referring to probably talks about situations when you have multiple accounts and ONE of them gets banned by eBay (for policy breach etc.) – THEN all your accounts will be restricted/banned too.

But as long as you keep your accounts in good shape, there’s nothing to worry about.

      Thanks,
      Andrew

  32. Hi Andrew need some advice please i was on eBay for many years selling – never had a problem them one day be about 17 months back i got a letter from eBay saying sorry your seller account is now closed . I was not allowed to sell anymore yet i had no negatives no complaints owed no money -and 2.199 perfect feedback’s ! since this time ive asked them 7 times why cant i sell??? they give me no reason ???( i thought Stalin / Hitler and the Klan were all past history )

Why would eBay DO THAT? i can still buy but not allowed to sell – i’m in Australia ive seen a carbon copy of this same situation happen to 4 other long term traders with zero explanations given to them as to reasons why they can no longer sell – its bizarre it appears certain people are singled out!

Alternatively i intend to do this – i have private pay pal -and i will sell again on eBay and also hey i’m not interested in eBay bureaucracy its beyond rude – i will not adhere to whats just not right ! I am not opening business pay pal account i’m not a business – really in theory eBay has to get off this horse where they dictate you must have pay pal to sell – its more than rude!

Anyway i shall open another eBay account to sell can i do this with no hassles -as i’m not interested in their B/S – i dont want hassles from them what should i do – stan

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Stan,

If you open another eBay account, they will ban that too – as they can easily link these two accounts.

Usually in the suspension email they give at least some hint/details on why you have been banned. If that was not the case, it could be some kind of error.

I would try calling eBay, ask for manager – as MANY TIMES as necessary to at least get a reason/explanation on why your account was restricted.

That is if you want to continue selling on eBay.

Opening 2nd account won’t solve the issue.

      Andrew

  33. Juan Plaul

Hi Andrew, can I purchase an ebay account ? I was offered a hole hardware inventory already listed on ebay, the owner would sell to me the inventory, transfer the telephone, email account and of course the ebay account with 8000 feedbacks. How should I perform that purchase? is just change the name, telephone and email of the account ? and after that linking the account with my paypal acc ? thats all ? Let me know, regards, Juan Plaul

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Juan,

By eBay rules, accounts can ONLY be sold as a part of complete Business sell.

So it’s not really allowed to simply sell accounts.

You may contact eBay and ask for more information on this.

      Thanks,
      Andrew

  34. Hi Andrew – got an interesting case here.

I was about to open up another business PayPal account to start selling on ebay, but I saw this article and got a bit concerned.

After reading your article, I’m now hearing for the first time that (like you said) you need to contact them each time you want to open a new PayPal business account.

I’ve already created 3 different business accounts, without any problem. PayPal didn’t even require business registration info/proof, they just asked for my social security number. Each of them are for my 3 websites, where I sell memberships for access to my sites (no registered business, it’s just myself and I guess it’s considered self employment, since that’s how I paid taxes on them last year).

So, based on my experience, you don’t need the company registration documents and proof if the account isn’t for a registered business. Like I said, you can apparently claim it’s for self employment.

However, like I said in the beginning, I want to create a 4th business PayPal account for Ebay selling – just for myself, so I think it would also be considered self employment.

My question is – should I NOW notify PayPal about this 4th account I want to open up? Or would that cause them to finally discover my other business accounts, and possibly have them shut down? (there’s no way a customer service agent has seen them yet, since last time I talked to them was before I started the 2nd and 3rd account – and apparently their systems don’t detect them).

Maybe I should just open the 4th without telling them, like I did with the other 3? Or is that getting risky with the other accounts that I was supposed to tell them about?

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Josh,

      Thanks for your comment.

I understand you’re based in the US, right? So it could be that rules are slightly different there.

But I’m 100% sure they have detected/linked all of your accounts already as they have systems in place for this.

If you have opened 3 accounts so far and it’s all good, probably you can go ahead with 4th in same way. There are no guarantees of course than in future they may limit these accounts, contact you and ask for more information.

But officially, PayPal clearly states that you can have just one personal and one business account:

      https://www.paypal.com/us/selfhelp/article/Can-I-have-multiple-PayPal-accounts-FAQ762

      Andrew

      1. Yep – I’m in the US. I’ll go ahead and open the 4th account.

I know that I’ll most likely be fine, but just thought I’d get your input first. I’l let you know if anything different happens, so that you can advise anyone else with similar situations in the future.

      2. Andrew Minalto

        Thanks Josh!

  35. Hello,
I honestly sold my shoes with several clear images, now I am no more in the same country but the buyer wants to return the item which will cost me more than double what it cost her to buy the shoes. I think this is extremely unfair to me and I have heard that eBay always takes the side of the customer. Why should I have to pay so much for a dubious claim? How can I avoid this unnecessary and dishonest cost put on me by the buyer????

I am merely a student and earn hand to mouth I cannot afford this transaction. Can you please please help me and advice me? Thank you. ?

    1. Andrew Minalto

Yes, you can avoid such situations by NOT selling on eBay.

If you do not fully understand how business on eBay works, just don’t do it.

      Andrew

  36. Hi Andrew! I recently created a new eBay account with all my old things I am selling and as I am now home all day every day I am dedicated to making sure I have 100% good feedback I put the best pics I can up the best descriptions make sure I do not overcharge on postage and I have personalised mailing bags and make sure I keep in touch with the buyers until they have received their items.
The problem is I have been a member on this account since July 22nd this year, but I did have a previous account which I only sold around 30 items on. There was 2 unresolved cases on there and the seller standard is below standard. On the old one I didn’t put much attention into it as I didn’t fully understand eBay as I was only just starting out.
I want more listings on my new account and contacted eBay this morning requesting more and they said because of my old account I can’t and I have to get the selling standard above standard and keep it there for 60 days on the old one before I am able to close it, if I don’t use it my new one will also be closed down.
I don’t really want to use me old one! And I was just wondering if I create a new PayPal account and link it with my new account, would it still get shut down?

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Rebecca,

That won’t help, no, as eBay links all your accounts and there’s no way to escape this unless you want to get into black-hat techniques.

But if your old account only had 30 sales, you can easily turn around it by selling cheap items via auctions. Get that account in good shape and you’re good to go!

      Thanks,
      Andrew

  37. Lorna Ramsden

    Hi Andrew,

I plan on opening an eBay shop but still unsure about listing/selling allowances. Ideally I’d like to start selling mainly new and used clothes then progress to other things also. I already have a good bulk of stock to get me well on my way and had planned on listing 30+ items per day to start which would amount to around 1000 items listed per month. I have been an active eBay member for 8 years with a pretty well established account which I was going to change to a business account and open a new one for personal purchases (so as not to lose any valuable feedback and DSRs I’ve built up over the years).
I have checked my selling allowance and it states that I’m allowed to sell 240 items per month which is not nearly as much as I’d like to be able to make this my living (I’m a mummy and really want to do this!)
Is there a way I can get a larger allowance? Will I automatically get more if I sell more?
Are listing allowances the same as selling allowances?
Also, if I started with a basic shop would the 200 free fixed-price listings be included in my allowance? (I doubt it but I hope not!) And what about the 20 free listings per month, would they be extras?

    Many thanks,

    Lorna

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Lorna,

200 listings included in your shop subscription will be part of your allowance of 240 listings per month.

You just need to upgrade your account to business, open shop and start selling! List those 240 listings first, trust me – it’s A LOT! Once you have listed all 240, you’ll start to get sales in, feedback from buyers. Then simply call eBay and ask to increase your limits.

      Thanks,
      Andrew

      1. Lorna Ramsden

        Great!
Thanks very much Andrew, much appreciated!

        Lorna.

      2. Andrew Minalto

        You’re welcome Lorna! 🙂

  38. Hi Brady,
I intend to open one seller account on eBay to sell one category of products and then to build up my seller ratings/reviews in that account. At some point, I’ll wish to close that account and set up another account for selling another category of products. Can I transfer my good ratings/reviews from the first seller account to the second one through eBay so as to start off the second account on good footing with new customers.
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Ben

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Ben,

Why do you need to close account?

You can simply re-name it, change user ID for it and continue using.

No, you can’t “transfer” feedback to other accounts.

      Thanks,
      Andrew

      1. Thanks, Andrew,
I’m new to eBay selling and want to consider all options before setting up an account. Thanks again for your help.
        Ben

      2. Andrew Minalto

        You’re welcome Ben!

  39. I only have one account, I’ve used for buying only. But when I started wanting to sell, I ran into the reality, there is a monthly limit on new sellers. My question is; If you have more than 1 eBay (for selling) account, will each account have its very own limits. Example: If your selling limits are $500 or 10 items per month (because of being new to selling), will you have that limit separately on each account (all items being different items of course). Example: First account, $500 value of all items listed. Second account, $500 value (of completely different items) listed and etc. for Third or Fourth accounts (if that’s the case) or would you have a total of $500 and 10 items to spread out over all the accounts. Also on a different query; Can you get your limits increased faster than what is stated as the normal (I think 90 days)? I have a 100% Feedback but all from buying with a score of “72”, would that help with getting a quicker increase in selling limits (my thought is no). I have read several posts and you seem to be doing a great job! Thank you.

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Brady,

Yes, normally all new accounts will have selling limits in place. But if you have a more stablished account, you can contact eBay and ask them to lift/increase selling limit for new account you create.

And yes, you can ask eBay to increase your limits via phone – just get first 10-20 sales in and call eBay to ask for an increase.

      Thanks,
      Andrew

  40. Hi,
Is this info the same today (2016)?

    Thanks,

    1. Andrew Minalto

Yes, it is still same in 2016.

  41. Hi, Andrew
I have an ebay account (french one) from 2002. I have the same account in several ebays – Uk, De, Fr. I have always used my french ebay to put on sale. Recently, I do not live in France anymore, I used the Uk ebay to put some sales online. First item once sold, I got a message from ebay that the funds from my sale could be blocked for 21 days (until delivery etc.) The reasons – my seller level is above standarts as it appears.
BUT in the french ebay – still the same account – my sales are perfect and I have 100% positive feedback and more than 10 sales…which means “good seller”.

Now, as I get it – ebay.uk is does not support my seller level from ebay.fr. This is enormously stupid – I am the same person and I have the same paypal account.
If I have to “prove” myself at every each fucking ebay store , it takes time and this is nonsense.
If this is it, how can I move my seller level to every new ebay store I want to use or at least the UK store that I will use for a while I think?

Thanx in advance for your answer

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Murnau,

This is how it works on eBay – you go from nothing to TRS on each regional eBay site. I didn’t invent the system so don’t ask me why 🙂

So you have to work towards your goals on each regional separately or use one account and offer international shipping, which of course lowers your listing visibility on regional sites a lot.

      Andrew

      1. murnau

        Thanx for your quick answer!
        Much appreciated

  42. Hi Andrew I have i question i have three ebay and paypal accounts all with different names,
different address and different bank info in my house would ebay link all three accounts if i am using the same ip address ?
if so how do i set up multiple ip address for each of one of the accounts

    1. alist-user

It will do you no good to change the email ID’s after the fact. eBay has spent a fortune on software to reduce scams and duplicate accounts. Their intent is moving away from their grassroots of garage sale type selling to larger eCommerce selling like Amazon.

They log the IP address that you used to set up the account. Even if you have three separate lines installed for your internet they will link them together. I don’t know for certain, but my guess is a good security team would be logging the MAC Address of the devices used to login to prevent people from scamming them through open source servers. PayPal tracks your IP address as well. Even thought its supposedly a separate entity, don’t kid yourself, they share enough info to allow you to pay and receive payments from eBay. Also they can still freeze funds if their is a dispute. They log every IP you have used to login to your accounts. PayPal knows the IP address. This is to stop a person from receiving large sums an closing out the account even if the item is not shipped. I filed a dispute while traveling and the Security Team immediately confirmed I was who I said I was as the IP was not one I had been using.

You can thank Uncle Sam for some of this because you have to cough up your SS # at some pt in time. When I signed up it wasn’t until I was reaching the threshold to receive a 1099k for the amount of sales. I have dual degrees in IP security and know that eBay uses cookies to prevent anonymous logons. This prevents a person from using a disposable email address to set up an account and open source servers from logging in. A person could go on a buying binge and not pay for anything creating havoc for eBay security.

    2. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Gonzalo,

      I don’t know for sure.

Common sense tells me that they’re not doing this linking solely by IP address as so many people nowadays use public wi-fi, which will have same IP address so it does not make sense to link ALL accounts using same IP anymore.

They probably now use address, name, bank information to link accounts. Maybe they monitor login sequence and this way connect accounts owned by same person.

      Thanks,
      Andrew

  43. I have seen ads on Craigslist offering to rent ebay and paypal accounts. I’m sure this must be against ebay policies. Is that correct?

    1. Andrew Minalto

It is against eBay & PayPal policies, of course.

Usually these kind of ads involve scams, identity thief and similar.

      Thanks,
      Andrew

  44. I was recently banned from both eBay and PayPal and they won’t give me any option to appeal. Do you think it would be better to create a stealth account or buy one from sellers on the Aspkin forums or Auction Essistance?

I need to get back quick as this restriction is really taking a hit on me.

    1. Andrew Minalto

Sorry Tonya, I’m not an expert in banned accounts so can’t give any recommendations here.

  45. Hi Andrew,

I am a first time visitor to your site and the information you provide is very detailed and generous.

    I have a question.

I am based in Canada and have an Ebay.com account.

Can I open an Ebay.co.uk account and sell the same products with the same listings as my Ebay.com account?

The reason for this is to be able to accept returns at a UK address. Also…UK customers will trust us more as we will have a UK address and feel more comfortable shopping from us.

    What do you think?

    Thanks in advance

  46. Hi Andrew,

I have been selling on eBay uk for 3-4 years now as a business seller and have 99.9% 7000+ positive feedback. We have two businesses one UK and one Irish, as we have retails stores in the uk and Ireland, the original eBay account was set up from the uk company but two years ago we decided to run the eBay through our Irish company, we simply switched the PayPal address and this has been working perfectly. Now my question is that we are considering closing our uk retail store and with it the uk company are we still ok for the eBay store to run as normal through our Irish PayPal? We still have a U.K. Address listed for returns etc and the goods will still ship from the uk as we drive the parcels over the border every evening to Royal Mail. I don’t want to lose my eBay account if I close my business down. Please advise. Many thanks in advance.
    Darren

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Darren,

Yes, I think this is perfectly fine. It will be Irish company, with Irish PayPal account.

So can’t see any probs with this really.

      Andrew

  47. Hi Andrew, hope you can answer a question for me. I had an account in the german Ebay a while ago, hadnt used it in ages. I want to start selling on Ebay now,but my German is rusty,so I deleted that account meanig to open a new one. Ebay tells me complete removal of the account can take up to 60 days. Can I open a new account on ebay.co.uk during those 60 days, using a different email but the same paypal? Or will they interlink the accounts and make a problem? Thanks so much!

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Antonina,

Yes, you can open a new account on eBay.co.uk now.

You can have multiple eBay accounts, that’s fine.

      Andrew

      1. Antonina

        Thank you!:)

  48. Hi Andrew. My question is about buying on eBay with gift cards. I haven’t been able to find it in their policies but apparently there is a limit to how many cards you can use or how much in value you can use. I’m not sure which. My dad also has an account so I had him use some of my gift cards for me, but now his account isn’t allowing them. Do you know what the limitations are? I’m assuming it is a quarterly or yearly restriction?
Also, since it is permissible to have multiple accounts, could I create a new account to spend my eBay cards? Or would this violate one of their rules? I buy and sell with my current account and would not want to be banned for spending money there. 😉

    Thanks!

      I don’t know really Walt…

You should either contact eBay and ask them directly OR read though T&Cs for gift cards to find out about these limitations.

  49. paypal is now supposedly seperated from ebay, why then are they still sharing personal information with each other, is this even legal?

Yes, it’s legal as when they separated, they put agreement in place that they will still continue to work closely on eBay side of things, which includes sharing information both ways.

  50. Hi!

So I was wondering this and I’m hoping you can help me out with this. Recently I opened up an ebay account, and being of my age I don’t have a bank account yet to where I can set up a paypal, however I have still been able to cash my checks and other sorts through an account that is shared by my friends, and they have a paypal account. In the next couple weeks here I was going to set up a paypal, but a few items that I’m watching end in a couple of days so I don’t have time to set up the account before then. So I was wondering if I attach my friend’s paypal account to my account will I be able to remove it and then add my account once I make it? I wasn’t able to find anything and I wanted to make sure I could before I got hasty.

      Hi Tayler,

Technically you can do this but I wouldn’t recommend doing it…

If you do this, eBay will link (behind the scenes) your eBay account with your friend’s PayPal and IF in future he messes up something, gets his account banner or whatever, your account (linked) will suffer too.

So I would recommend you just wait out until you get your own PayPal account sorted out.

      Thanks,
      Andrew
