How to Reach #1 Spot on eBay’s Search Results!

Writing descriptions, taking product pictures, creating listings… so far so good! All quite easy, technical tasks that you shouldn’t have any trouble completing.

But when you list your items you suddenly realise that they get lost in hundreds of pages of search results. This will obviously depend on the competition in your niche as sometimes you can be on the first page without doing any extra work BUT in most cases, you’ll be competing against hundreds and sometimes even thousands of listings, all selling similar products.

Being on top of the search results – it’s something many eBay sellers dream of. But following this guide, that dream can now become reality and you can finally achieve page 1 search rankings for ANY product.

In the good old days it was super easy to get your listing at the top of search results. There was no Best Match, no Cassini search engine, no Top-rated sellers! All you had to do was offer the cheapest price and you would land at the top of page 1. Not anymore…

Nowadays on eBay it takes more than just the lowest price to get noticed in search results. Price is still a very important factor of course but as the default search method on eBay is set to Best Match (and not lowest price first), you have to follow Best Match’s guidelines to even stand a chance of getting your listings ranked highly.

So what are the factors that Best Match takes into account when ranking listings for search results?

That depends on the listing type:

  • For BIN listings Best Match takes into account seller performance standards, recent search impressions & sell-through rate, recent sales, listing title, price and whether free shipping is offered. Additionally, TRS status is also important as well as whether you offer Premium Service for your listing.
  • For Auction style listings – mostly the same factors as above WITHOUT the sales history (as there will be just one sale) plus the listing end time is important too. Listings ending sooner will be featured higher in search results.

This is what eBay tells us on their FAQ page here.

You don’t have to be too smart to figure this out though. Just do a quick search on eBay for any item and you’ll see that on the first page there are listings with some common qualities like:

  • Most first page listings will be from Top Rated Sellers (TRS);
  • Most first page listings will offer FREE shipping and Premium Service;
  • Most first page listings will have an extensive sales history;
  • Most first page listings will have the BEST price for that particular item;

You’ll also notice that there are a few auction style listings randomly featured, which we’ll cover later on in this post.

So – knowing all this information, what do you do? Do you keep dreaming about landing your listings on the first page OR do you take action and simply follow eBay’s guidelines so that your listings tick all of the boxes to be featured at the top of search results?

Don’t know about you but I’d rather choose the second option and really WORK towards ranking my listings as high as possible.

First things first:

If you’re not a TRS yet, become one! As simple as that. You can easily become a TRS within 1-2 months by following this guide. There are NO excuses not to do this, especially as now the limits are so low (just 1k in sales needed).

It’s a one time job you simply have to do if you want to achieve decent results on eBay. We use the exact same procedure in my 60DBP every time we start a new business and it works flawlessly. All you have to do is follow my guide to the letter.

Now, once you have achieved TRS status, you can start working on your serious, money making listings – get them ranked.

I won’t talk about how to create a great looking listing and write a good title in this post – you can check out my Turbo Lister tutorials here and follow my guidelines to make your listings look great.

The most important thing apart from TRS status in Best Match is selling history. The more sales you have, the higher you’ll rank in search results. And a side effect of having a large sales history is increased conversion rates as people will buy MORE if they see that hundreds of other people have already bought that item (crowd/mass psychology).

But how do you achieve these “hundreds of sales” in the first place?

It will take time, patience and occasionally, some investment. But the formula is very simple – most of the largest sellers on eBay use this very same formula:

Step 1 – Create a Good ’Til Cancelled listing (you’ll need a shop subscription to be able to list products under GTC) and set a very low price in the beginning. The price should be below the market’s average.

Step 2 – Once you start getting sales, gradually increase the price until you reach your desired/target price point (or you reach the maximum price people are prepared to pay).

That’s it really! This is what most sellers do and it works.

Let’s use a real life example to help you better understand how it all works:

1) You list a PC keyboard in a GTC listing for £2.95 (average selling price is £7)
2) After the first 5 sales are in, you increase the price to £3.95
3) After another 5 sales you increase the price to £4.95

…and so on until you reach £7, £8 or whatever your target price is.

Depending on the product you sell and the competition, you may also be required to offer free shipping and premium service. The easiest way to check this is by simply doing a search on eBay for the item you plan to sell. Check the first page of results – do most sellers offer free shipping? If so, then you’ll have to do the same to compete with them.

Obviously this strategy will only work if you have a decent level of stock, or can top-up inventory when needed. Depending on the product and competition, it can take anywhere from 10 to 1000+ sales to reach the no.1 position in search results.

Sometimes this also means that you have to lose money in the beginning – this is your cost to reach higher search results which will then result in increased profits.

Don’t forget that it’s not a simple matter of 1st place or nothing. In most cases it’s already an achievement to get your listing to the first page, while being in the top 10 search results is very good. Again, this will all depend on the competition and your offer.

Another way you can boost your sales history is to use my Auctions to BIN strategy. This concept works because auctions are featured higher in search results right before they expire. Remember, you can have up to 14 auctions running simultaneously for the same product – use this to your advantage and get massive exposure to your GTC listing which will help you build up your sales history much faster.

RINSE & REPEAT!

Really, it’s that simple. There are no magic ingredients – if you follow this system you’ll rank on the first page and higher in most cases as long as your offer is competitive.

Be realistic though – there are niches on eBay with HUGE competition (like phone cases) where it’s almost impossible to get on the first page of results without spending tons on loss leaders and even then you have to sell for very small profits. Just don’t deal with items like these, I have always said that.

IMPORTANT! When you follow this strategy, and have reached a good position in the search results, DON’T ever run out of stock! Don’t ever cancel your listings as then all your effort and hard work for that listing is gone and you have to start all over again.

If you see that you’re going to run out of stock soon but new stock is delayed, INCREASE the price for your item to a level that means no one will buy it from you. Once you get new stock in, lower the price back to normal and continue selling.

This high price period can’t last for too long though as for each day that goes by, your selling history, views and sell-through rate will all decrease, which will lower your rankings.

When you see listings on eBay that have thousands of sales – you know they’ve been up and running for many months, sometimes even years. That’s the key to success here – be patient as it only gets better as each month goes by. And once you have ranked highly with a good sales history, it’s a pretty stable position to be in. Results can fluctuate a bit of course but in most cases, once you’re on the first page, you stay on the first page – as long as people continue buying from you.

Conclusion

To sum it up, here’s what you have to do to achieve a 1st page search ranking on eBay:

1) Become a Top Rated Seller
2) Offer a great product, at a great price via a great looking listing;
3) Use the GTC listing format;
4) Start with a low price (below the market’s average);
5) Increase the price gradually once you start getting sales in;
6) Use the Auction to BIN strategy to get extra views and sales to your GTC listings;
7) Ensure you don’t run out of stock;
8) Be patient – this is a long term game!

Your seller performance indicators, opened cases, feedback and DSRs are also all important of course, but that’s really a default requirement to doing business on eBay in the first place.

That’s all there is to it. No magic, no secret trick – just hard work and patience.

Don’t try to reach that no.1 search ranking at any cost though, not if it means that you have to sell your items too cheaply. Quite often we see that the top 1-3 listings in search results are for items selling for a very low price. In many cases, too low a price to make any reasonable profit.

If it doesn’t make financial sense for you to go that low on price, don’t do it. Profit is what we’re after at the end of the day! Even 5th or 7th place is a good achievement and with a great TITLE and GALLERY IMAGE you can still attract a lot of views and make tons of sales!

Good Luck!

Thanks,
Andrew

Do you hav any advice for a new ebay shop? the shop is ebay.co.uk/str/oharajewellery i was wondering if alt tags are relevent anymore since they are uploaded straight to ebay? How would they be added. Thanks

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Niall,

      Thanks for your comment.

I’m sorry, but I don’t sell on eBay anymore – I switched to Amazon completely in 2017.

      Andrew

  2. Hi Andrew,

I follow your articles and they are very informative.
I need some advice. I am a TRS – account only has 500+ feedback currently which I have gained since september ’18. I have recently started selling a new line of jewellery products in January. Sales are very slow – only 5 so far, I have tried everything from optimizing titles to trying to list in multiple categories – views seem to be quite low at around the 50ish mark. I have fast & free, premium service badges etc on all listings.
Any thoughts? I would greatly appreciate any advice.
    Thanks,
    Aaron

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Aaron,

I don’t sell on eBay anymore so don’t know the latest, BUT one thing I know for sure – jewellery is a VERY difficult market to work in. I can’t offer you any advice as I would never recommend anyone getting into that niche in the first place. You are essentially competing with millions of other listings in with a product which has super low conversion rates. Run while you can.

  3. Hi there great post I am a trs u have hardly any defects and over 99.7% positive feedback over 4800 feedback we sell mattresses somehow my listings after years had reached number 1 and 3 position slowly one of them has dropped down to position 28 and the number one now went to number 2 for few months and last week it went to number 3 and today number 7 , my competition has out of 30 listings at the top 25 are his he always reaches the top and I have tried everything price drops, offers, he even was out of stock for 7days in a few variations but he is still number 1 2 3 4 5 and the rest how does he get to the top so easily and quickly with new listings he also gets 2000 feedback a month with 8 positives a day but everyday I check his account his feedback are removed even ones that are not eligible for feedback removal just don’t know how he does it and want to get back to the top again if you search mattresses or beds you will see him at the top

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Adam,

      Thanks for your comment.

I don’t know…. you should probably ask them how they manage to do this! 🙂

It could be that their conversion rates are simply better than yours and that’s why they’re at the top?

or it could be that they have some kind of secret agreement in place with eBay?

I don’t know and probably you won’t find it out either…

      Andrew

  4. Hello,

I have sold products on Ebay before which sold really well. I’ve added a new listing, did GTC, cheapest price, even offer a bulk discount, have multiple photos , everything in stock , looked u what the best title was and still I can’t find my listing on any of the first pages. What am I doing wrong ?

    Kind regards,
    Julie

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Julie,

How old is the listing? And you can’t find it at all in search, even when searched by exact title?

      Andrew

  5. Hi Andrew,

Ive somehow naturally went to top 5 listings in 1st page and I sell few items a day with my GTC listing.
Just got good niche to make money for amazon course and product 🙂 (and title, desciption and most importantly photos)
My concern is that if it will relist itself after 4 weeks will I loose this place?
Thanks in advance for you answer.

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Andrew,

Good to hear that, congrats! 🙂

No, if you’re using GTC listing, you don’t have to worry about it expiring – it won’t happen.

Just make sure you keep stock levels up at all times!

      Thanks,
      Andrew

  6. John Capizzi

I lost first page placement and now my listing is buried in God knows where.

What can I do to determine how to overcome this?

  7. I am hoping you can help. I have had a GTC listing going since 2010. I just have the one lisiting and it has been very successful for me. I have been in the top 10 positions on the Best Match page for many years. 3 months ago, I went to update my quanities and received the error : “It looks like there’s a problem with this listing.Variation specifics cannot be changed in restricted revise” I call every week and am advised it is a tech issue and being looked in to. The confirmed I have no restrictions on my account. In the meantime, many of my size and colors are being reduced to ZERO. Today I noticed I have fallen to bottom of the second page. Any suggestions on how to clear that error so I can update my quantities? I have since created two new listings but they obviously don’t show my extended history of sales. I am desperate.

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Cindy,

I’m sorry bit if eBay can’t help you resolve this error/issue, how could I?

So you need to work with eBay to get this fixed.

      Andrew

  8. Keith Bareham

Hi Andrew. I am a new seller to ebay and doing quite well. TRS achieved quickly. I have on product that sells very easily which I sell hundreds of every week. Most people buy 10, 20 or 50 of my product. My problem is that on occasion I have someone who buys just one or two and this then loses money. It needs to be at least 5 to make a small profit. How can I start the quantity at 5?

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Keith,

Good to hear that & congrats! 🙂

You can easily avoid this situation by NOT selling individually at all.

Instead, you would have a listing with VARIATIONS – so that smaller variation is 5, then 10, 20 25, 50 – whatever packs you want.

This way you don’t have to sell packs below 5 units at all.

Only problem is that you can’t add variations to a live listing and it would be stupid to close down current listing and start over as it is doing so well for you….

      Andrew

  9. Dave Smith

If I keep clicking on a competitor’s listing, increasing their page views, will that de-rank them, in any way? Or will it have the opposite impact? Or none at all?

    1. Sneaky underhanded tactics like this are just what other sellers love to see.

      Thanks for playing fairly.

    2. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Dave,

It won’t have any effect as eBay sees it’s one person doing those extra views.

      Thanks,
      Andrew

  10. Hi Andrew,

All the information I have been able to find out about shops tells me that shop listings don’t appear in search results, so how do people find your items?.

    1. Andrew Minalto

Totally not true, where did you get that?

Even more – there’s no difference between shop and non-shop listings on eBay anymore!

Years ago there were two different formats – normal and shop listings but that was long time ago.

      Andrew

  11. Hi Andrew, does this work on people such as myself that is not selling same type of merchandise? Example; PC keyboard, having an quantity of … gee/,,, maybe 10 or 20, that you are able to start low to high. What about the folks like me who selling stuff? Does that make sense?

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Debra,

      Thanks for your comment.

Typically this method works best with items you have lots of in stock – like 100+ but even with 20 items in stock you can do this and at least it will help you get higher in search quicker. You just increase price after you sell every unit so that you reach your target price maybe after 5 sales or so. At least give it a try and see how it works out!

But as I said, this is more for items you have lots in stock and plan to sell for a long time.

      Andrew

  12. Jeff Deane

    Hi Andrew
brilliant articles as usual, how do you manage to go on holiday and keep your listings up near the top of rankings

    cheers

    Jeff.

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Jeff,

      Thanks for your comment.

      Unfortunately that is not possible…

You can do this by hiring someone to run the business for you (process orders, reply emails etc.) while you’re gone BUT if you put your Shop in holiday mode, unfortunately, from what I have seen, almost always you lose rankings when you re-open the shop after a week or two.

At least that’s what I have witnessed and learned from my blog readers as I personally never close my shops when I go on holidays.

      Thanks,
      Andrew

  13. Neal Springer

    Hi Andrew,
Thanks for this article! Wasn’t sure if you can give further assistance for the particular circumstance I’m in. The manufacturer of the product being sold has a limit to the price. There are 5 others selling the same product. What would improve my listing so that I can show up higher in the seller listing?
I have a Top Rated Seller status. The product sold is a great product and good price (can’t go lower). We have plenty of stock.
    Let me know!
    Neal

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Neal,

Have you tried using Promoted Listings feature?

      http://andrewminalto.com/promoted-ebay-listings/

      Thanks,
      Andrew

  14. Chris Chalk

I’m inclined to disagree with this post. I am at a loose end as to why my listings appear under my brothers listings all of the time. I am TRS, and if I type in two words of one of my items, for example “Stag Lamp”, then my brothers item appears higher than mine. I have sold more, am TRS, have the word “Stag Lamp” together, have 100% feedback, perfect DSR, optimised title…

Why does my brothers “Stag Lamp” – different product, appear higher with less sales, less feedback, no TRS, higher price?

Another example is this – I have 15 Bistro Table Sets listed. I have sold 1. My brother has 10 listed and has sold 15 over the same period. He has lower feedback, lower DSR and our product listings look pretty similar…

Why would his listings appear higher? I simply don’t understand it

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Chris,

      Thanks for your comment.

have you compared CTR (from search) and conversion rates?

These have the biggest impact on search rankings as obviously eBay wants to push listings with higher conversion rates higher in search.

      Andrew

  15. So what you say is if we run out of stock the rankings fall?
Im asking this as i have limited stock

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Yes, that’s correct.

  16. Thanks a lot

    1. Andrew Minalto

      You’re welcome! 🙂

  17. Hi,

Andrew my account has a deflect rate of 0.23% I contacted eBay and they said they will remove it. Do you have any idea how long it takes for them to remove it?

    1. Andrew Minalto

If they said they will remove it, they should do it straight away but dashboard updates once a week so just wait a week and see if it has been updated. If not, contact them again.

      Thanks,
      Andrew

  18. Hi Andrew! Thank you for your amazing guide, It really helped me out. I just had 1 more question, I am a top-rated seller and also use the GTC method. My listings used to be at the very top. I sold many electronics. But at one point my listings dropped rapidly from 1st place to like the 50th page. I did not receive any negative feedback. I had a few listings as cash and collection only, A few buyers brought from me but realised late that it was cash and collection. They told me to cancel the transaction and so I did. I went ahead and asked eBay to cancel the purchase. eBay opened a case for this. Could this be the reason for my all my listings dropping very low?

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Mehrab,

If your seller performance hasn’t been affected by this, you’re still TRS and projected to be TRS on next evaluation, then no – I don’t think that could be the cause.

      Andrew

  19. Hi Andrew, thanks for your information but am keen on your thoughts. I am a top rated seller, have much larger volume of sales than similar sellers. I have been selling for longer also. I use the GTC method and have 100% feedback. Also have good returns policy. But my issue is I cant seem to get number 1 or sometimes 1-5 listing even for items where I am cheapest. A new seller will come along from time to time and bingo – they go straight to top without TRS, etc etc. I’ve looked at their listings and they dont seem to do what you have suggested but are still ahead. The one thing they do is use the word “Sale” in the listing title. I havent done this as it kind of makes me cringe but i guess its worth a try.
So my question is – to flip the coin on this article, is there certain things that will make your listing push down the list even if I am doing as you suggested?

    1. Andrew Minalto

It’s very hard to answer that as you can’t 100% beat the algorithm to get guaranteed first position in search.

It could be keywords they’re using in title or in description or it could be pure luck.

Often times I have seen that brand new listings get pushed quite high in search, for some time, but after that they are lowered ins search. It’s very difficult to pin point the exact thing that causes this….

      Andrew

  20. Thanks for sharing great info, highly appreciated. Blessings to you.

    1. Andrew Minalto

      You’re welcome! 🙂

      1. That is one of the reasons I do not use GTC’s. I have found that better rankings come from 30 days and then relisting.

  21. Joseph El Masry

I have been looking at the average stock for my competitors and rates they sell a day looking at Terapeak also.

Do you recommend doubling on my stock initially when I begin selling on my eBay business and then just top month by month always having an emergency amount of stock to set aside in case of whole seller issues ?

For instance, my competitor sells (best seller for that category) x1000 of the same item average a month. Should I then buy x2000 bulk and then reduce my monthly purchase from my wholesaler to x1000.

This being subjected to having a successful eBay store on first page etc.. following your guides etc.. I did manage to gain TRS status in 2 months last year using your guide but due to illness I had to stop. So I have some little experience but will continue to strive and use your great information to become better.

Do you recommend I follow this rule of thumb or something else ? your advice is greatly appreciated as always.

    Kind regards

  22. Joseph el masry

Hi, Andrew Brilliant guide tutorial as per usual.

I wanted to ask do you still recommend to still list a bin item at GTC or 30 days but revise stocks and enable : Assign automation rule – ‘Relist continuously whether it sells or doesn’t sell’ via the seller manager pro tool.

I assume both would do the job in retaining recent sales score sand keep the listing alive, of course like you said if the stock does not arrive then increase the price until it does. But yeah going on your guide and ebays faq via :

http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/find/bestmatch_faq.html#How do I use SMP automation rules while ensuring that I retain my popularity/recent sales score?

what do you think is best from your personal experience and of course ultimately achieving that first-page position.

    Kind regards

    Joseph.

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Joseph,

You should use GTC listing option, not 30 day BIN.

GTC is the only listing option you need to use for items you have lots of items in stock.

      Andrew

      1. Joseph El Masry

Thanks Andrew for your reply, Following your comments I went back and rechecked the FAQ’s regarding : Retaining popularity/recent scores. I am slightly confused at Ebays 2nd Tip which you can see below. Especially where the sentence writes : except GTC. I get the impression that eBay is telling users to use other duration except for GTC. Unless I have misunderstood this.

What is your take on this, please ? I have provided a copy of the FAQ below.

The optimal way to use SMP automation rules is to mirror the functionality of a multi-quantity Good ‘Til Cancelled (GTC) listing as follows:

        1. Create a product with the right quantity available to sell

        2. Create a template with any quantity and duration except GTC. <<<

        3. Assign automation rule – 'Relist continuously whether it sells or doesn't sell'

        4. As stock arrives or gets depleted (outside of eBay sales), modify the quantity available in the inventory product. eBay sales will update the quantity automatically.

This will retain your recent sales score and keep the listing alive until the quantity is sold out.

        Kind regards.

      2. Andrew Minalto

But why you want to do this?

Instead of just using GTC listing format, hassle free?

        Andrew

      3. Joseph El Masry

True, shall go for this. thank you 🙂

  23. Hello Andrew,

my listing has been up over 2 weeks now after eBay took it down with a restriction, that wanted invoices for my goods. Before all this I was a brand new seller less than 100 feedback and on the 1st page! Selling electronics too!

Now I have had to repost my item and start again however 2nd time round it hasn’t taken off as well.

I am a top rated seller with premium and promoting my listing too but am only getting about 1 sale a day after it being up for 2 weeks?

  24. Hi Andrew,

Re: never run out of stock

What if it is GTC listing as they are not meant to lose sales history rank are they? Even if you run out and then replenish stock?

Or have I got it wrong

    Thanks

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Dee,

Yes, with recently introduced Out of Stock feature, that would be the case.

However, I have found in real life that eBay still doesn’t like when yo go out of stock for prolong period of time. Few days is ok but more than that and somehow listing gets pushed down in search results.

      Thanks,
      Andrew

      1. Thanks

thats me bummered on one of my listings

will have to drop the price again, i suppose.

  26. Hi Andrew I joined your course a few years ago and ain’t had a chance to speak to you at all, would it be possible to do so? I have found a way of getting on the first page on eBay regardless of sales history, price etc. I can even get a product on the first page with a picture of something completely different

  27. Thanks for the article! Helping my family run the ebay business. We are actually in the business of selling women’s apparel but every piece of clothing is unique so we can’t keep an active inventory for each item. Is this going to make it impossible to get in the top of the “Best Match” filter?
(We sell brand name clothes so there is a good amount of competition).

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Ken,

Yes, it’s very difficult to get to top search results with one off items.

Your best bet is to trial Auction style listings as they get featured higher in search right when they’re listed and before they end.

      Andrew

      1. Andrew is there any benefit to listing it as an Auction with a buy now option? Does that cost more? Thanks.

      2. Andrew Minalto

There is benefit, yes, but only up to first bid you receive – after you get first bid, BIN option will disappear.

Yes, it does cost extra in fees to add BIN to auction listings.

        Thanks,
        Andrew

      3. Great thanks for your help Andrew!

        Best,

        Keni

      4. Andrew Minalto

        You’re welcome Ken! 😉

  28. Joshua Hullender

Thank you so much! I have had #1 spots before for items like polymer clay and frankincense. As you say there is huge competition in some niches. My mistake was letting those listings run out of inventory and I lost all that momentum. Sales have fallen. Your article gives me hope to get back to the top again.

    1. Andrew Minalto

      You’re welcome Joshua! 🙂

  29. Joe Beaven

Thanks for a fantastic article, Andrew. I do have one question that I’d appreciate a reply to please. I live in the UK and sell on both eBay.co.uk and eBay.com. It’s a lot easier for me to do things that will help improve my account’s standing like selling a large number of in-demand low-priced items and offering 1 day shipping with items I sell in the UK, but will doing so help improve my ranking on eBay.com as well as eBay.co.uk or are they kept separate?

    Thanks again,
    Joe

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Joe,

If they’re two separate listings (for same product) – one on eBay UK and other one on eBay USA – they’re totally separate, yes.

Top Rated Seller status is also awarded for EACH regional site separately.

      Andrew

      1. Emrah Yalpur

        Hi Andrew!

Is it not true that if we are top rated seller in eBay.com.au or uk that we automatically become top rated seller on all eBay sites .com included?

        Thanks!

      2. Andrew Minalto

        Hi Emrah,

        No, not anymore.

You have to reach TRS requirements on EACH regional eBay website/platform.

        Thanks,
        Andrew

  30. Hi, question. If you are selling one of a kind antique high end jewelry pieces. If there is an old listing , let’s say over 12 months with 50+ watches. Would you still advise to end and relist or are you better off keeping it so the people who are watching it can find it?
    Thank you

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Karen,

For items like these it’s probably best to keep it live but try some type of promo/discount? Maybe that would interest 50+ watchers.

I haven’t really dealt with items like these, it sounds crazy that you can’t sell an item for 12 months! 🙂 Maybe the pricing is too high? Or demand is simply not there? Not sure.

      Andrew

  31. Paul Griffin

    Hi Andrew

I have been using the Auction to BIN technique, but i have noticed every time my auction listing appears new the top as it draws to an end, my BIN listing drops dramatically is the rankings

Have you ever come across this before?

    Thanks
    Paul

    1. Andrew Minalto

No, I haven’t really noticed anything like this.

Make sure your title is different for auction and BIN listings.

      Andrew

  32. Christine Smith

All the advice is great but if your product is not seen on ebay how can you ever get to be a top dog. Im selling the same thing at half the cost.

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Christine,

Sorry, what you mean by – “product is not seen on eBay”?

      Let me know.

      Andrew

  33. Thank you Andrew for the valuable advises,
I’ve one question though, what if the other power rated sellers start lowering their prices as low as yours so they won’t give you a chance to compete? what would be the best approach to deal with such a situation.

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Firas,

This will happen from time to time, yes. (price wars)

What can you do? Play smart so that you don’t have to compete on price alone! If you follow my guidelines in the EAB course, your offer/listing by default will be slightly different than competitors so it’s not like you’re competing on price alone.

      Andrew

  34. Hi Andrew
I am a seller since last 10 years and am seeking advice for the first time !
I have about 10,000 vinyl records in GTC format up for sale but my sales are only $2000 a month on an average. Also I hardly get many offers/inquiries…. Just going by pure statistics of numbers ( as i have so many different items ) I should be getting more sales, don’t you think?
So I have never been able to hit it big with Ebay :(((
    Regards
    Sunil

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Sunil,

      10k vinyl records, wow, that’s a lot! 🙂

You haven’t mentioned how many items you sell per month but my guess is that with this niche, these products, it’s simple question of demand? e.g. many of the titles you sell simply don’t have enough interest/demand to make more sales for you.

Or it could be that your prices are not competitive.

      Andrew

  35. Hi Andrew,
I started selling 2 months back. For the first month my selling was too good actually for certain products i was getting at least 5 orders every day. My products were listed in 30 days listing format. After 30 days when products automatically relisted i stopped getting orders. Until that time I did not know about GTC. I ended all my listing and listed again GTC format but i started receiving just 4/5 order in a month. I was selling that amount every day when those products were listed in 30 days format. Just to test I changed some of my listing to 30 days again. As expected my selling got boosted and again started receiving good amount of orders everyday. I haven’t received TRS yet because my account is only 2 months old. I am just hoping my GTC products will get good search visibility after I receive TRS. I want to make my ebay account stable that is why i don’t want to list my products on 30 days basis. Do you have any advice on this andrew? Have you also experienced like this?

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Robin,

No, this is first time I hear of this – such a huge change in sales when switching to GTC from 30 day listing format.

I can’t even explain why this could happen as technically they’re almost same listing format… and usually GTC listings perform better than any fixed term listings.

      Very strange…

      Andrew

      1. I’ve been selling for 12 months now and pretty much followed this guide. For the first 6 months or so things were going well. I was getting a good position and holding sales. Now for the past few months things have dropped. This is despite the fact I’m TRS, have excellent sales history for my best items, offer fast and free postage and tick all of the boxes. Things are dead and rankings are dropping.

I’ve heard that changing to shorter listing periods helps as the search results page gives a boost to new listings and also ending listings. While you can argue that there’s a bigger benefit to an auction because the algorithm favors visibility for auctions, especially ending ones, the risk is that you may not get the price you are asking for.

For me I’m at a loss. Nothing I do seems to change anything. I can drop the price down to a stupidly low price and they will continue to fall in the rankings.

      2. Andrew Minalto

        Hi John,

Have you noticed drop in sales for your competitors?

It could be the conversion rate – if it’s lower than competitor’s, your rankings will suffer as eBay pushes listings with better conversion rate higher in search (as they make more money this way).

        Andrew

  36. Hello

    Great read.

My question relates to single items. We do not have or offer multiples of any items.

When creating a new listing we fill out every section of the sales listing page. We take high quality photos, complete rich descriptions, write relevant titles that make sense but find many of our items are on pages 3 or further down. I just looked at one particular item that another seller has and they have page 1 result 4. Their listing is atrocious (2 blurry photos, 3 word title and one sentence description). Only “advantage” they have is they have more reviews than us. This search result has remained unchanged for several days now.

Makes zero sense if the search results are meant for the consumer to be a “best match” and they are presented with garbage listings like that.

Any idea on how to rank higher for single items? We have a store, 100% rating, no defects, and all listings are completely filled out and relevant. I even spoke with someone at eBay and had them look at every single listing in our store and they agreed all listings were all within best practices for best match.

    Thanks a million

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Scott,

Single items are very tricky indeed….

Only advice I can give is to list them as auctions as auctions get featured much higher in search results when they’re listed and before they end.

You can set your starting price same as your target BIN so basically first bid gets your desired price. I know this will cost more in insertion fees but there’s not much else to do to get your single item listings featured higher in search.

      Thanks,
      Andrew

  37. Hi Andrew,

It’s David and thank you for your sharing.

    A serious question here:
I had followed your tutorial and I did it on one of my listing. Then it ranked 7th-10th since mid of Jan. The sales of that listing is comparatively stable. However, we know it’s not enough because there’re 90% top 15 listings are selling from those top 2 sellers in that niche. We want to compete with them so we put another listing up to top 10 in some kind of keywords. It’s been accomplished within 1 day and the 2nd listing ranked 10th in one of hot keywords. We got stable sales on the 2nd listing but the sales of 1st listing suddenly drops down. The ranking of both two listings continuously drop from 10th to 13th-16th. The most unbelievable is that the transactions of those 7th-12th listings are only 20-50% of us. We asked ebay for this and they told us ebay cassini is a complicated thing that we already knew. In case of that the feedback percentage, open cases percentage etc. such of these things won’t change within 1-2 days, why the ranking drop?

What we have changed in these 2 days is the item description. Our original template is almost 5mb and takes 8-10 seconds to load. We simplied it and it only takes 1-3 seconds to load. In theoretical Cassini loves this conversely Cassini is taking our listing down.

Could you please give us any suggestion of this?

    Thank you.

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi David,

The 2nd listing – is it for exactly same product?

      Andrew

      1. Hi there Andrew I have a quick question how do I change the quantity showing on my account as more than 10 rather than it showing the exact quantity

      2. Andrew Minalto

1.Go to My eBay > Account > Site Preferences.

2.In the Selling Preferences section, click Show next to Sell Your Item form and listings.

3.Click Edit next to Show the exact quantity of items in your listing if the quantity exceeds 10.

        Select either:

*Display “More than 10 available” in your listing (if applicable)
*Display the exact quantity in your listing

        4.Click Submit.

      3. Angel Valdivia

Hi Andrew I’ve been following your posts for some time. I started on eBay just since Feb this year (to sell I meant). Oh man how many mistakes I’ve made ! But now doing better
I want to tell you a big THANKS for you help !!!
        Greetings from Texas 🙂

      4. Andrew Minalto

        Thanks Angel! 🙂

      5. Hi Andrew,

        It’s not a same product.

        Thank you.

      6. Andrew Minalto

it could be just a fluctuation.

2 days is not enough time.

Give it 1-2 weeks and see how it performs after that.

        Andrew

      7. Thank you for your response,

Yes it ranks 7th, 8th or 10th now when I refresh it 10 times.

Another question, shall we use capitalized case or upper case for title?

I checked the titles of other sellers in my niche are all upper case, but in other niches those large sellers (100000+ feedback) write their listings by capitalized case.

      8. Andrew Minalto

I recommend to capitalise first letter for each word.

Some words can be all capitals like FREE, PRO, SPECIAL etc.

Think from customer perspective – make it easy to read & scan (most people scan search results very quickly).

  38. Hi there,

I really love you formula to success it gave me great insight to the Ebay game. But one question I have in mind is about shipping. When i start selling small profit items for a low price how do people make any money when it comes to the shipping cost especially when people start ordering multiple items from you listing. For example I can sell a pillow for $5 and do free shipping. I still make about $1 profit (Shipping cost about $2) but when people started buying 20 at a time per one user shipping (shipping becomes $17-$20) is more than the cost of the sale and I end up losing money. LOL any thought or insight on this? I looked at the other users on ebay that have the same exact item and they still offer a similar price and free shipping. In the long run this will kill your profit margins how do we combat this issue?

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Jeremy,

If your price is 5$ with free shipping and shipping costs you $2.

Then if you sell 20 pieces to one person, that means they pay you $40 for shipping (20 x $2).

$40 should be more than enough to cover shipping cost for 20 units if you can ship one unit for just $2.

      Andrew

  39. jeff Nelson

Hi – Great article that – thanks.

I have a question I’m having trouble finding an answer on – I wonder if you can help please?

I already have about 50-60 items listed as a private seller (kids clothing bundles/outfits mainl) – If I upgrade to a shop, do those Listings remain in a format that I can introduce straight into the new shop categories or do the Listings need inputting from new?

    Many thanks,

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Jeff,

Yes, your existing listings will remain live and will be shown in your shop.

You don’t have to end them and start from scratch.

      Andrew

      1. jeff Nelson

Perfect – thanks for your time!

      2. Andrew Minalto

        you’re welcome Jeff!

  40. Keith Edwards

Brilliant post Andrew. I studied it, and it`s worked perfectly for me for 5-6 months with multiple types of items. Some nearly up to 1000 sales already. Over the last few weeks, every listing I have, seems to have gone down the listings dramatically. One case, from number 4 in the listings, to around 35. I`ve phoned Ebay, and advised to put a February sale on, to see if it helps. Also lowered prices to get rolling again. I`m doing everything right I think. Sending out the same day. Leaving feedback etc. Sales have just plummeted. Mondays used to be between 50 and 70 parcels to go out. This Monday, 9. since then only 6 more items. Ive looked at all my listings, and my competitors and I cannot see what`s happening. Does Ebay change criteria every so often? Give certain sellers better coverage as a whole?

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Keith,

If your selling status hasn’t changed (TRS etc.), it sounds like a classical eBay glitch – search algorithm mistake or something. Such sudden changes should not happen if everything else stays in place.

Hard to even give any advice on this as it’s MACHINE that controls search results…

Only hope is that it could be just temporary and you’ll get back your position soon.

      Andrew

      1. Keith Edwards

        Thanks for rapid reply Andrew.
Fingers crossed it`s on the change already. I`ve sold three items since I posted the message. I`m going to back it up with doing some more similar multiple listings. I will be using HTML now ive watched your Turbo Lister Tutorial.. It will be interesting to see the difference in visitor conversion rate with a more professional looking listing.

        Keith

      2. Andrew Minalto

        Great to hear that! 🙂

  41. Hi Andrew

I’ve been using this technique with good effect, although i have noticed even those my product is No. 6 on the search results a higher priced seller is always outselling me 2:1. Is this just the way it goes sometimes? Im assuming some buyers just click the first result they get to rather than scroll down a bit.

Happy to share the 2 listings if that helps

    1. Andrew Minalto

Yes, that’s how it works in most cases.

I don’t have exact data but I think first 3 listings in search results get 50% or more clicks than all others compared (on the first page).

Obviously, it depends on the products for sale, how good those first 3 are etc.

      Andrew

      1. Ok thanks, it is a little frustrating when the other sellers price never seems to lower by much for them to remain consistent. Unless overall account history plays a part

  42. Awen Evans

Hi Andrew, How do I tell what the ranking is for each listing, do I simply enter the keywords, and see where it comes up, or is there another way to do it? Thanks

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Awen,

Yes, you can do that OR use free Listing Analytics app in your eBay account.

Another option is to use My Sales in Terapeak:

      http://andrewminalto.com/terapeak-trial/

      Thanks,
      Andrew

  43. Andrew,

My concern about gradually increasing prices is that a current buyer might look at a previous listing from a review and see that I was offering the same product for less price and would decide to not buy from me.

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi John,

Some may do that, but majority won’t…

If you check most first page listings on eBay, they will have gradually increased price to get there, so it’s all good.

      Andrew

      1. Andrew, thank you very much for the reply.

That is good to hear. It was my slight assumption that most would not object.

I made several mistakes by not running a Good Till Canceled Listing. All my listings would expire at 30 days, even if they were selling relatively well.

        Much appreciated.

      2. Andrew Minalto

        You’re welcome John! 🙂

  44. Hi Andrew

Great stuff on this topic, something I need to ask is there used to be a way to pay for sponsored top listings has this feature been stopped as I heard about it from a friend about 3-4 years ago.

    1. Andrew Minalto

Yes, they took it down several years ago.

      Andrew

  45. sameena haider

I have started ebay selling but don’t get noticed
    can someone guide me please

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Did you read this guide?

  46. Hi Andrew,

I’m so glad I came across your website, it’s fantastic!

There is one question that neither eBay or Google can give me the answer to, and even though I have searched hundreds (no exaggeration) of websites, nobody seems to be able to answer it!

Basically I have a product that only 2 other eBay users are selling in the UK. When I type my products name into Google (not Google shopping, just a general Google search), the other 2 eBay members products are displayed, with pictures, at the very top of the page.

I have sold more of the product than the other 2 members, yet my eBay listing won’t show up if someone is searching Google for it like theirs does.

I contacted eBay and they informed me that this will be down to Google, and that it’s to do with keywords, number of views etc. Even though me and the other 2 members use exactly the same product title and description, and I have more views to the product as proved by the listing counters.

I then contacted Google who could confirm that these 2 adverts were not paid for (adwords or shopping campaign) and that it was definitely eBay that has their listings shown on Google.

I have seen similar questions regarding this matter but absolutely nobody can give a decent answer, or at least one that might justify the reasons for this.

If you could shed any light on this for me please Andrew, I will be forever grateful.

Please please please, before I spontaneously combust!!!

    Thank you,

    Trev.

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Trev,

      Thanks for stopping by.

I think the reality is that no-one will give you an answer to that as it comes down to a machine – algorithm and it could be that it just shows it that way and there’s nothing you can do about it. Also, it could be that your competitor listings have been online for longer than yours?

Another very real issue could be duplicate content – if you say you have exact same listing titles – that could be reason why your listing is not showed up as it could be flagged as duplicate content.

But there’s no 100% sure way to tell why this is happening Trev.

      Andrew

  47. Hi Andrew,

1st of all I will just say thank you for this amazing helpful site!

Regarding getting and paying for an eBay shop to enable the ‘good til cancelled listing’ option, is there any point because as Val pointed out, you can simply go to your site preferences and basically change your settings for free to give you this benefit of keeping purchase history when running out of stock?

    Kind regards,

    Rik

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Rik,

There is point as only shop owners can have GTC listings in first place. Without a shop you can’t have GTC listings at all.

      Andrew

      1. I’m only listed as an eBay business and not a shop, and I’m able to have GTC listings though?

      2. Andrew Minalto

Hmm, then it could be that they have changed rules on this and GTC format is now available to everyone.

      3. I have sold more items than my eBay competitor, I offer free posting and my items are cheaper than his, yet I’m still in number 2 spot. The only thing he has more of is eBay feedback. Do you think this would be it Andrew?
And thanks once again for an awesome website!

      4. Andrew Minalto

        Hi Rik,

Unfortunately it’s impossible to nail it down to the every element and guarantee 1st position in search.

If you’re 2nd, that’s already a very good achievement! Just make sure your gallery image is better than his and you may get same or even more clicks to your listing!

        Andrew

  48. Hi Andrew,

Great blog. I’ve been using ebay for years and have learnt a lot from your site in the past year or so. I’ve just read through all the comments to ensure the following questions hadn’t been answered already:

My ebay business is auction based. I start all bids low to draw in the crowds, I’m a TRS and premium seller (same/next day dispatch etc.) with spotless feedback and 0% defect rate. Where I’m struggling is my auction placement in the search results. I know you’ve heard this before but there are sometimes hundreds of other private sellers who are not TRS or premium with minimal feedback who feature higher than me when running a keyword search. This seems illogical, as I’m practically jumping through hoops for ebay. The only time my listings make it off the last page is on the day the auctions are finishing – they work their way up until being top 5 in the final 30 mins or so of the listing. The listings run for 10 days.

I don’t spam the title (I did before with lots of relevant keywords but guessed this might be what was causing the issue so stopped), my pictures are perfect and my templates are clear. I’ve recently made the decision to list the same number of auctions spread across the week (avoiding the weekend) with the hope that daily top search results would result in more views and higher sales, thus encouraging buyers to look at my other items.

Does anything stand out as a problem to you? I just can’t figure it out…appreciate your help on this one.

    Thanks Oracle.

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Mervyn,

This is how auctions actually work – they get featured much higher in search right when you list new auctions and right before they end.

With that being said, there are no 100% fool proof ways to get your auctions to top search positions, it’s just eBay’s algorithm is not that precise and we don’t know all the details on how it works….

      Andrew

  49. Andrew,

I checked all my listings that I have right now and every one of them has taken a hit. For keywords for each listing that I was in the top 3 (say out of 30 listings for that keyword search) I am now at the end..last..number 30. And this the same case for all my other listings..each one I show up as the last listing for that particular keyword(s) search. How can this happen when I just reached TRS status a few days ago..and have gotten all positive feedback in the last of 50+. No policy violation or anything of that sort. Just scratching my head of why this happened all of a sudden when everything was going good for a full month.

One thing that concerned me that might have had an effect on it is the days right before this happened I had many listings (10+) that end with no sales. All of these had like 130 or so views for the 30 day BINs. Do you think these listings ending with no sales could have had a bad impact on my account and that is why all my listings took hit? Any suggestions on how to go about fixing this if indeed this is the issue?

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Joe,

It could be one reason, yes…

Another one could be that it’s a temp glitch in eBay’s Best Match in which case you probably need to contact eBay and raise your concerns.

Lastly, maybe you’re violating duplicate listings policy?
