Video transcript:

Hello & Welcome!

In this video I will show you how to create great looking eBay listings now that eBay has discontinued the ever-popular Turbo Lister desktop application.

I won’t be using any complicated tools or paid software! I want to show you how anyone can create great looking eBay listings without spending a penny. So without further ado, let’s get started!

Since we don’t have Turbo Lister anymore, I recommend that you create your listings directly on eBay, via your Seller Hub. It works in a very similar way as before, just now it’s a much faster process as all the listing details are available on one page. Seller hub also allows you to duplicate and manage listings in a similar way to how Turbo Lister did, but let’s leave that for another video.

So you start by simply clicking on SELL from the top header menu or click on Listings > Create Listing directly from Seller Hub.

On the first step eBay asks for a UPC, ISBN, part number or product name to help you find the most suitable product category but you can simply enter the product name here or the full listing title that you’ll use and then just manually select the category later on.

On the next page you have all the information related to your listing, including the listing title, category, condition, photos, description, payment/shipping settings and everything else.

I won’t be covering all those details as they’re self-explanatory really. In Photos you can upload up to 12 images for your product and if you list with variations, a further 12 images are available for each variation. Remember that you want your gallery images to be SQUARE and at least 1600 by 1600 pixels in size.

What we’re interested in is the Item description block. This is the place where you add a template, product description, images and all other information.

Now, if you DON’T plan on including product images inside your description block, you can simply use eBay’s interface. Switch to HTML mode, paste your template code, then switch back to Standard mode and simply add your description, payment, shipping and other texts.

It’s very easy to do and you can’t really mess anything up here!

BUT as I have always pointed out, you should also include product images inside the listing description block too! As many people will read your description and will want to see images there, without going to gallery images.

Plus having product images within the description helps you format your text into blocks, separating each few paragraphs with a product image, which creates a much better looking listing that’s also easier to read as no one really wants to scour through large blocks of plain text.

So we need to figure out how to insert product images inside your description block. Technically you can do this directly on eBay, by working in HTML mode and using HTML snippets. But it’s far from easy and takes a lot of time!

I don’t know why eBay doesn’t just offer us a simple Insert Image tool like we had in Turbo Lister, but it is what it is and we have no choice but to find an alternative.

And here’s a free, online based tool that I use for creating and formatting all my listing descriptions:

htmleditor.in

It’s basically a free What You See Is What You Get HTML editor offering a very rich formatting tools panel, including a quick and simple image insertion tool, bullet points and much more.

The first thing you want to do is click on the Maximise icon in the tools section to get the full window editor.

Next – click on the Source button which basically switches the editor from standard Design mode to HTML mode, just like on eBay. Then delete any code present and paste your template’s HTML code.

REMEMBER!!! You only want to use NOTEPAD and nothing else when you work with template code or any text for copying and pasting. Do not use Word or copy text directly from other websites! You always want to have all text saved in a Notepad file and copy from there – otherwise you’re going to completely mess up the formatting.

Once you have pasted your template’s HTML code, click on that Source button again to go back to Standard Design mode.

There you can start working on your listing just like you would on eBay directly or on the now discontinued Turbo Lister.

Add a headline, product description, payment, shipping & other texts. Format them! Make headlines bigger and BOLD. Selectively format text, break it up into small paragraphs so it’s easy to read and understand by quickly scanning your description.

Use bullet points or numbered lists where needed!

There’s even a handy TABLE creation tool built into this editor so if you need to create some sort of table, make sure to use that!

This is why I like this tool so much as it offers way more formatting tools than eBay does and even Turbo Lister was very limited in this way. But if you want to make a truly complex listing description, you can do so using this free htmleditor.in tool!

Now that all the text is properly formatted, it’s time to add product images! As you know, you will need to upload your product images somewhere online before you can insert them into your listing. If you have your own hosting account – use that. If not, you can use this website to upload images:

postimage.io

Make sure you upload images in the correct size, which will depend on your template’s width. If you’re using Spicy Auction Templates, the maximum width of your product images should be 700 pixels. So when you prepare your images, make sure to re-size them to a maximum width of 700 pixels before you upload them to your hosting account or postimage.io

Then you simply copy and save your image URLs in a notepad file so you can quickly and easily insert them into your listing.

What you do is click the cursor at the point where you want your image to appear and then select the IMAGE tool from the formatting menu.

Then paste the first image link that you saved in a notepad file under URL and then click OK!

If you’ve done everything properly, your first product image will appear in your listing.

Repeat the same steps for all other images and once your listing looks perfect all you have to do is click on the Source button – copy all of the HTML code and simply paste it on eBay, in HTML mode. When you switch to Standard mode on eBay, same formatting should show up, including all images of course.

Sometimes when you paste code on eBay and switch to Standard mode, it will show up with some formatting alignment issues. Don’t let that scare you! At the bottom of the page, click on the Preview Listing button and eBay will generate a preview of how your listing will look once live. In that preview everything should look fine.

Now, there’s one extra step you need to do before you copy the final code to eBay IF you’re using a responsive template.

How to know if you’re using a responsive template?

Simply re-size the browser like this and IF the template changes according to the size of your window, you’re using a responsive template.

On the other hand, if your template is not responsive, it won’t re-size – it will stay the same size like this.

So, if you’re using a responsive template, you need to edit the settings for EACH image you include in your listing to make them responsive too – so that they also change size when your template changes size. If you don’t do that, it will look like this – the text and template itself change according to the size of the window, but the images stay the same.

So it’s super important to make your images responsive too, otherwise your whole listing will look very bad on mobile devices.

Here’s what you need to do:

1)  Click on the first image in your listing

2)  Click on the Image button from formatting tools

3)  Click on the Advanced tab

4)  Under Stylesheet Classes enter this line of code: img-responsive center-block

5)  Under Style settings DELETE all the text that is there (if there’s any text)

6)  Click on OK!

You can now check if you have done everything correctly by re-sizing your browser window again and checking if the image changes size accordingly. As you can see – it does, which means that my first image is now responsive and will look perfect on mobile devices.

All you have to do is repeat the process with other product images you have inserted into your listing and once that is all done and tested – copy the final HTML code and paste it on eBay!

And that’s basically it – a simple, quick and free way to create and format beautiful eBay listings with lots of images, bullet points, tables and whatever else you want to include!

There’s one downside of using this tool though – you can’t save any work you do on the go! As it’s an online tool there’s no way to save it.

So if your internet connection is unstable or if you know that it’s going to take you a long time to finish your listing, make sure to periodically save your work! How? By simply switching to HTML mode, copying all code and saving it in a notepad file.

Then if something happens and your internet stops responding or your computer crashes, you’ll always have a back-up copy of the work you’ve done. All you have to do then is copy the saved code from the notepad file and paste in to the html editor.

This tool does save your work in some way though – you can use UNDO and REDO buttons to go backwards or forwards a few steps if you have made a formatting mistake for example. So this is another great advantage over eBay’s tool which does NOT offer UNDO and REDO buttons!

Hope this helps & I’ll see you in the next video!

  1. I still use turbo and will as long as I can and there are several reasons why.
    1. Turbo lister allows you to set up specific templates and inventory categories. For instance, I have categories for antique glass, antique porcelain with a sub category for Limoges, a category for Christmas with sub categories, etc. When I want to find a listing, it is simple.

    2. I can leave my listings sitting in turbo until I am ready to upload them. For instance, I am writing listings for a huge set of china by individual items – ie plates. I want to upload all the items at one time rather than piece meal. You can’t do that with seller’s hub.

    3. I have a lot of control of how my listings look by using some of the templates available on turbo. My Christmas listings have Christmas themed templates.coup

    4. I have the listing on my desktop. If after a couple of months, it hasn’t sold, I can take it down, wait three months and upload again. At best, listings stay on the unsold items page for 30 days and if it isn’t relisted, the listing is lost.

I am writing listings fast and furiously using turbo now and just holding all of them since I am having major surgery in a few weeks. While convalescing I won’t be able to pack out boxes. As soon as my surgeon gives the go ahead, I will be able to upload several hundred new listings.

  2. Hi Andrew,

I successfully implemented HTML content with lots of success a few months back. However in the last few days I’ve noticed that the images from postimage.org are not showing on either iOS or Android devices. e.g item number 132576885298

Basically everything looks great from a computer browser but mobile browsers are not showing my images. I’ve checked the mobile-friendly checker on ebay and they are not showing there either.

    Do you have any ideas?

    Many thanks

    Lee

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Lee,

Please check the postimage website – you will see that they had recent problems with domain name and they have now changed the domain name they use.

So you will have to change those image links to put them back online.

Such sudden changes is main reason why I don’t recommend using FREE image hosting sites as a long term solution – you never know what can happen. Your own hosting account is the only, 100% guaranteed and safe way to host those images for your eBay listings.

      Thanks,
      Andrew

      1. Andrew, you’re a genius!!

Thanks for all your help as ever.

        Take care

        Lee

      2. Andrew Minalto

        You’re welcome Lee! 🙂

  3. Hi Andrew,
Thank you for all your great and educational posts.
I’ve been using the same method on my eBay listings. I tried host images on postimage (uploaded without resizing), but many photos in the listing looked blurry (did not have this issue before / last year). So I resized photos to 700 px max width before uploading onto postimage, the images do look sharper, but at the same time they looked much smaller on computer screen (I wanted to have large sharp photos displaying).
And now I have a paid account on imageshack to host my images, and they do look sharp and in large size after running test with my html template. The problem is that the images will not show in an active listing on eBay, this is due to eBay’s new security policy that the hosting site need to be https compliant and the hosted images direct links need to start with https in order to post on eBay (found out by calling eBay and I thought my image hosting site is in compliant). However, all my direct links copied from imageshack do start with https, but some how they became http when running the analysis report a tool provided by eBay to check if any issues with your listing.
Do you have any suggestions what I could do to fix this issue? Is it the hosting site?

Thank you so much for your help and apologize for the lengthy comment.

    Kevin

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Kevin,

Have you tried copy/paste image links WITH https in a browser to see if they work?

They probably should work. If so – you simply edit listing code and change all http links to https (add letter “s”) and that should fix the problem.

Just make sure those are all DIRECT image links and not some kind of code. A direct image link will usually end with the image file name and .jpeg or .jpg

      Andrew

      1. Hi Andrew,

Thank you so much for your message.
I created a brand new listing on eBay (uploaded new images to my hosting site), and the direct links (they start with https) do work in the browser. However, once the listing is active on eBay and when I run the analysis report on this item (btw, the images are not showing in the listing), it’s showing the same message (my image direct links are not https complaint, and they are shown as starting with http in this report). But I am certain that the direct links are starting with https when I copied, I do not understand why they became http in the analysis report.
Do you possibly have any clues what is causing this issue? and do you have any recommendations on image web hosting sites?

        Thank you so much again.

        Kevin

      2. Andrew Minalto

        Hi Kevin,

I don’t know really what causes that error…

Contact eBay and ask them why they’re changing https links into http links.

        Andrew

      3. Hi Andrew,

        Thank you again for replying.

Just wanted to share with you that the “mystery’ was solved but not fixed, this is due to that the direct links copied they were actually being redirected to anther site (which start with http), that’s why the images are not showing on my eBay listings.

And in one of your blogs you mentioned about hosting your images on your own hosting account (hostgator), my only question or concern is that once the images being uploaded in bulk, will I be able to retrieve the direct links of images in a folder at bulk or one click as well (assuming I create one single folder for each item I’m selling, and there is about 25 – 35 photos in each folder)?

        Thank you so much again.

        Kevin

      4. Andrew Minalto

        Hi Kevin,

That’s what I thought! So it was NOT a direct image link 🙂

With your own hosting account – you will also need to get an SSL certificate to get https links so shop around and find a hosting company that offers cheap or free SSL certificates.

You won’t be able to get links in bulk, no, but you can simply NAME them in a way that you can get one link and then easily/quickly change link name to others, if you know what system you’re using (like 1-1.jpg, 1-2. jpg etc.)

        Thanks,
        Andrew

  4. Anders Jørgensen

Great infomation as always Andrew! If using the table option how do you avoid it to mess up the format in mobile view? Desktop looks great and right on but on mobile it goes beyond the borders and looks terrible.

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Anders,

Not sure in that one, you will have to do some additional learning online on how to make those tables mobile responsive.

Probably it’s not that hard, just need to add some extra code to them.

      Thanks,
      Andrew

  5. Hi Andrew,

First, I think your video was very helpful.
As a long time Turbo Lister user, I have to migrate to a new platform and was not impressed with EBay’s seller hub software. Fortunately, you have provided a workaround.

What I didn’t see in your video is what software you used to create the borders and layout in your listing template. Would you mind sharing?

    Thanks

    Anthony

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Anthony,

Hmm, not sure what you mean by borders and layout? You mean the actual listing template?

It’s taken from my own Spicy Auction Templates:

      https://spicyauctiontemplates.com

      Thanks,
      Andrew

  6. Hey Andrew, have you tried using https://codisto.com/xpresslister/ as a replacement for Ebay’s Turbo Lister, and if yes what is your opinion of it? I’ve spent today getting to grips with it and for the most part it is fine, although there are a few bugs and quirks. Most of the other solutions out there are either stupidly expensive, or flawed and incomplete.

    1. Andrew Minalto

      No, sorry, haven’t tried that.

And probably won’t – as I don’t see any need for me to use a 3rd party listing tool anymore. I do not deal with hundreds/thousands of listings per shop, so I don’t need bulk listing options.

      Thanks,
      Andrew

      1. Fair enough that is a good point. Xpress Lister is not completely an offline tool either, as you upload your listings once ready via their browser based cloud system and then it forwards them to Ebay itself. Any changes made manually to your listings on Ebay, will be reflected in the cloud app too, e.g. it syncs between the two.

I tried making a multi-variant listing yesterday but I had no confidence in the result. Inputing the categories and colour variations etc was quick and easy, but once submitted and on to the next edit stage it all looked wrong. I know people say Ebay can produce errors in these type of listings, especially with more than eight variations I think they say; I had eleven variations inside the listing, so I will remove a few and jiggle things around to see if it improves.

So I am still not sure if I will continue using it yet. It produces nice looking listings and they are mobile responsive and compliant with the 2017 Ebay policy changes though.

  7. Andrew,

Thanks very much for the help,
Is there an internet resource that can make the HTML code responsive if your template isn’t already?
I would imagine that would make content look better on different devices.

    Many thanks,

    Dom

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Dom,

I’m sure there are many resources that covers this but basically it would mean that you need to learn HTML/coding as it’s not as simple as adding a piece of code.

      Thanks,
      Andrew

  8. Hi Andrew

    Great info as always

I have followed all instructions and inserted pics etc . But when I try and preview on eBay template does now show

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Mark,

      It should show up…

Does it show up ok in description block – Standard view?

What template you’re using? SAT template?

      Thanks,
      Andrew

      1. Mark Bradbury

        Hi Andrew

Thanks for the help. Yes SAT Template. It shows in description block but formatting is out a bit. My pictures is there etc. Than when I go to Preview at the bottom of page it’s not there?

      2. Andrew Minalto

Can you try making right click in Preview window and click on Refresh/Reload?

      3. Mark Bradbury

        Hi,

When I try to do that I only get options of select all or print.

      4. Andrew Minalto

        hmm, weird…

Only thing I can recommend is to list the listing on eBay and see if it shows up on eBay or not when LIVE.

If template/formatting shows up in description block, it should come up when listed on eBay too.

        Andrew

  9. Hi Andrew

Great Video this will really improve my advert descriptions.

However when I try to insert an image on to the HTML Editor the image does not show and all I can see is a small box with a cross in it. Is there any chance you know where I’m going wrong?

    Thank You

    Rachael

    1. Andrew Minalto

      Hi Rachael,

Most likely you’re using WRONG image link.

You need to use direct link for images – one that starts with http:// and usually ends with .jpg or .jpeg

      Andrew
